I was in a local thrift shop today looking for something specific when the CDs caught my eye and I spent a minute browsing them. Bought 3. The first one I played was "The Peter Moon Band. Greatest Hits, Collection 1". 1988 Kanikapila records
What an interesting and varied collection of music. Kauoha Mai is simply stunning. Slack Key Samba and Slack Key Minor Blues both made me sit up and take notice.
Interesting stuff if you can find it.

There should be a monument to Peter Moon somewhere, for all his contributions to Hawaiian Music. On second thought, his monument has already been created. His music. |

Back in the Seventies, there was not much Hawaiian Music that managed to make it onto the Airwaves in Florida. Lots of Caribbean and Cuban music along with the Pop (Rock) and Country Stations. But then along came Peter Moon's "Slack Key Swing" and it got lots of airplay. Probably my first exposure to "Pseudo-Slack-Key" and a wonderful tune in any case.

The Peter Moon Band was one of the best Hawaiian groups ever. I saw them a couple of times in the eighties at the Honoka'a club, which I doubt held fifty people, amazing at the peak of their popularity. The energy they delivered in that intimate setting was simply unbelieveable. No one was sitting down while they played- even the kupuna just had to get up and dance. They played for hours, and clearly were just loving it even though I doubt the owner could have afforded to pay them more than their airline tickets to be there- must have been a personal friend? Anyway, playing for the pure love of music, and the joy of sharing that with the audience. The first year may have been the best performance I have ever experienced, in many years of seeing very varied and very famous groups. |
