November 6 through November 13

Keoki Kahumoku, proud resident of Hawai'i Island and five-time Grammy award winner, will be holding his 5th annual Kahumoku 'Ohana Hawaiian Music and Lifestyles Workshop from November 6 through November 13 in the district of Ka'u. Immersed in the culture of Hawai'i on the grounds of the Pahala Plantation Cottages, this is a rare week-long opportunity to learn ki ho'alu (slack key guitar), 'ukulele, steel guitar, song writing, music theory and hula, from today's top masters, many of which have ties to the island of Hawai'i. Other cultural activities include lei making, chant, Hawaiian Song and choir, pahu drum carving, lauhala and coconut palm weaving, food preparation and traditional crafts. Tuition for the event includes all music and cultural classes, private one-on-one lessons from all instructors, three meals a day prepared by Keoki Kahumoku and staff featuring local farmers and ranchers of the Big Island, nightly kani ka pila (jam sessions), imu (earthen stove) ceremony, food demonstrations, and more.

The largest roster ever, this year's instructors include George Kahumoku, Jr.; Reverend Dennis Kamakahi and his son David; Ledward Ka'apana; Moses Kahumoku; Herb Ohta, Jr.; John and Hope Keawe; Sonny Lim; Diana Aki; Danny Akaka; Buddy & Sammi Fo; Brittni Paiva; Konabob Stoffer; Aka Pule Dooley; Darci Baker; Jeff Peterson; James Hill; Auntie Ka'iwi Perkins; and many others from around the island.

Students will learn some of the history, culture and legends of Hawai'i's past, and music techniques of the past and present. Masters of their craft, the award-winning artists/teachers will share their talent, legacy, and love of the islands during this week-long event. The workshop closes with a free public concert on Saturday, November 13, in Pahala.

Ha ha, funny Konabob! You know I didn't mean to imply that Moses was scary; rather scary for you getting to play with him, and Keoki, and with no rehearsal!

Now that is scary, the two of them (Led & George) falling asleep and their hands keep moving! I've only almost fallen asleep while playing guitar, so I guess I have a way to go before I can play in my sleep too. If I even live that long! Ha!

George Kahumoku does the same thing: he falls asleep, sitting up in a middle of a kanikapila, but the hands still move and the chords still change while he's sleeping with his head on his guitar! I have a photograph!

It does my heart good to see Moses in the lineup again this year for instructors-wow, can you imagine having him as a teacher?!!

Thanks for posting this Konabob-hey, I just read that you got to play with Moses and Keoki last year too-must have been great, even if a little scary!

Know it's going to be a real blast-wish I could be there! Enjoy, all who do!
