| Maggie, 'as why Slipry1 get one van. For Kalama Days, there were 4 of us and instruments and more room. It was a rolling party with music and joking and talking story. |

I got the van for 2 reasons: 1) I played pedal steel and keyboards in a ****ry band at the time, and 2) I'm nutso about skiing (both downhill and x country). It was a relief to switch to the lap steel and play Hawaiian - my old ShoBud weighs 85 lbs in the case, and my Peavy Vegas 400 weighs 35 lb. Kept me in shape, though. Also, Maggie, I'm trying to figure out when I can come to Eugene between now and Thanksgiving (in LA for that). I'll be in touch with Chico on that. |

I have a question for you Walkingbass players. What kind of amplifier are you using, and are you happy with it?
I sold a bass to a friend last week, and I decided to take her to the local guitar store to try out different amplifiers. We tried several bass amplifiers in the $200 to $300 range. They were all nice amplifiers, but none of them could filter out the "finger noise". The amplifier that had the warmest, richest tone turned out to be this tiny little 10 watt guitar amplifier! http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Ibanez-IBZ10-Tone-Blaster-Amp?sku=480126
We had to turn the treble, midrange, and reverb off. It also distorted when we turned the volume all the way up, but what came through at half volume was quite pleasant, and loud enough for playing with a small group of musicians. She loved the price.
My favorite amp is still my Yamaha YST-SW60 subwoofer. Most professional musicians I work with think it sounds better than most $600 bass amplifiers. I see them on Craigslist and Ebay from time to time. Usually in the $60 range.
If any of you have suggestions about types of amplifiers that work or do not work well with your Walkingbass, please let me know.

I've heard Bob play with the little Yamaha sub and it is indeed a very fine sounding rig.
Although I don't play a walking stick, bass was my first instrument, and I still play every chance I get. In fact, I just started restoring my old Framus Star Bass from 1967.
Nowadays I use the same amp I use for guitar; the Carvin AG100D acoustic guitar amp. Aside from its use as for acoustic guitar and vox, it happens to be killer bass amp for medium sized halls and outdoor gigs. It's got a 12" speaker w/ a tweeter (the tweeter has a separate volume control), three channels, one of which is voiced for bass, and enough tone shaping and volume to get the job done. Plus it's very lightweight & fits in the back of my Mini.
The sound is similar to some larger GK rigs I've played through: tight and punchy, with plenty of bottom.
Admittedly more expensive than the ones Bob mentioned, but it's also worthy of professional use onstage or in a club.
Another one to look for on eBay is the old GK (Gallien Krueger) MBS 112 micro bass rigs. Hard to find, but they are exceptional amps. The new ones are great, too.
I lament selling my old 12 inch Polytone-- now that was a cool little bass amp....

| Although I don't play a WalkingBass, I'd like to suggest the SWR Workingman's 10 bass amp. It has a 10" speaker with a tweeter (on & off switchable), 80 watts of power and is nice and compact. I use it primarily for kanikapila or small gigs and it's able to handle a 5-string bass without any problems. I've had it about 4 years now and I paid about $250.00 for it, although they have the latest generation out now so I'm not sure how much they cost these days. |

Howzit Bob! I did some checking and found that the newest version is now called the "WorkingPro 10". Power has been upgraded to 100 watts and the cabinet modified for tilt-back capabilities, if desired. Specs can be found here: http://www.swrsound.com/support/manuals/pdfs/WorkingPro_10.pdf
