We had a really nice weekend here in Kona. The Daughters of Kamehameha put on their annual fundraiser for the summer palace of the Hawaiian royalty, Hulihe'e.

Hours of hula and plenty of ono grinds. I was asked to play steel with Joe Spencers group, The Merrie Monarchs. A fine bunch of guys who mostly perform traditional Hawaiian music.
Joe asked me to kick things off with Sand on the Steel guitar.

This is my electric short scale tuned G-D-E-G-B-D

Hey, Konabob! You going to the HSGA convention in April? I'll be there, in Honolulu from 4/23 - 5/4. It's be great to meet you. And for all, the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Association is having their biennial convention at the Queen Kapiolani Hotel 4/28-30. It's a fine event, and a chance to see the great Hawaiian pickers (and a few of us haoles).

I don't have plans to be at HSGA. Wife bought new furniture instead. If I sell a few basses, things may change.

I just calculated out a string set for my tuning on a standard length (25.5") solid body guitar. Make sure you have a good strong neck, as these strings will be nice and tight! Notice that the top 3 strings are unwound. Makes for really nice smooth sailing up there.

Note Gauge Type Tension
D .015 plain steel 28.96#
B .018 plain steel 29.49#
G .022 plain steel 27.75#
E .029 wound stainless 28.80#
D .032 wound stainless 27.67#
G .050 wound stainless 28.29#
total tension on the neck = 170.96#

You can order them online at:
