With George Kahumoku & Bob Brozman coming together on Dec. 5 - Dec. 7 for a Song Writing Workshop, I have been enspired to put together some of my tunes on my home page. I am hoping to meet a few of you on Maui, and to get a chance to polish up my acoustic steel with the help of these two great musicians. PS, you may recognize the logo on my page. Sarah Whitaker did the artwork which could not be more perfect for my web site. Thanks again Sarah!!

Aloha,
-Konabob

Konabob,

Alas, I could only hear brief sonic glimpses on my dial-up. That is sad because I'm very fond of slide/steel guitar. Thanks anyway. The bits I heard sounded very nice.

Aloha,

Pauline

Great site! A slight correction - Chris J. Knutsen started making the Hawaiian steel guitar about seven years before he taught Herman J. Weissenborn how to build them...

Thanks for the feedback... dial-up? I just added direct links to each song further down the page Hope that helps. The songs are between 1 and 3 megs each. They are mp3 format, so should be playable on almost all computers.

Doesn't work for me, either - maybe because I use Netscape?

john,

it worked for me when i switched from netscape to explorer. my guess is that it has something to do with what plugin is used.

with netscape, the little radio noise that comes up first was fired off in a newly created window that contained the standard media player controls (position, volume, rewind, etc).

aloha,

keith

Konabob, the direct links are to .shtml files, not the MP3s. I can post the MP3 links here if you like, but I'm not going to do it without your permission. In any case, you now have 7 tracks on my iPod! (And a still-only-partially tabbed Ironwood Moon on my computer.)

Craig
My goal is to be able to play as well as people think I can.

Thanks for the input Craig - the mp3's are as follows:
http://www.konaweb.com/konabob/honolulu.mp3
or:
ironwood.mp3
konahotel.mp3
konainn.mp3
kuuolioli.mp3
poidog.mp3
waikiki.mp3

I feel privileged to be on an iPod! How hip is that?

Well I hope that a few of you try steel sometime.
I discovered that if you stick a 16 penny nail right
behind the first fret of any guitar, it raises the strings
just enough to play it as a Hawaiian steel using a
socket wrench or small shot glass.

-Konabob

Thanks so very much Konabob. Tonight the MP3 streaming worked; the net must be a little more quiet. I prefer to download music I'll want to replay, so I'm downloading.

Great Pauline! I have been going through chemo, and it has been cramping my style. There is a period in the chemo cycle when you can't be around people due to low immunity. I love to be around people - musicians especially. Playing my guitar and posting on Taro Patch Net are the things that make this whole process a lot more bearable. I have gotten some really nice email from the members here. I can't wait for George's workshop on Dec. 5!

Aloha e Konabob,
I'm looking forward big time to George's workshop, too! He mentioned something to adapt an acoustic guitar for playing slide called a "nut extender" (I've gotten lots of spam about enlarging my penis, but I don't think I've ever heard of this...). You know da kine, and if it works as well as a 16 penny nail?
Please know my good thoughts are with you as you go through chemo. Support, love, music, a positive outlook and the healing powers of Hawai'i itself are important to have doses of, too.
Looking forward to seeing you again at the workshop. E malama pono.

Any good guitar store will have nut extenders. If you plan on playing a lot of slide guitar, it is worth buying one for $6 to $9. The nice thing about using a nail (a cotter pin works even better) is you can quickly put it on and take it off so you can switch back and forth from slide to regualr taro patch guitar without having to loosen all the strings. I will demo the technique for you when I see you at George's workshop!

Internet Explorer works perfectly! I like how the radio works. You have a very nice touch on the steel, by the way...

I'm sorry to hear that your chemo treatments are keeping you from sharing and enjoying music with others. I'm glad you're able to share your music with us over the internet, though.

Very nice work Konabob! You make the Weissenborn sound very full and complex.
I was similarly inspired to play taropatch steel (without the talent), so I've converted a cheap Montana travel guitar for this purpose. These guitars aren't good for anything else, but they work well for steel. There's a picture of the nut extender, too.
Check it out at http://www.imbris.net/~jessehj/steelguitar.html
If you set up a taropatch steel, it's also fun to play slide blues, too.

By the Way KonaBob,

Are you going to add anything to the Virtual Kanikapila project?

You are the one who basically got the whole thing started and
your contribution on Bass and/or Slide would be the core of
the song. You are also skilled enough in computer recording that the
technical stuff is no problem for you.

So are you still interested in this project?

(Inquiring minds want to know)
