After a 2-year hiatus, I finally got my act together to get back to Hawaii (Hawaii Island). Yikes!!! $100/day for a rental car and that was the absolute cheapest. About 1/2 the cost of accommodations. I heard rental car companies shipped everything back to mainland. Maybe I'll take my bike with me instead of my guitar.

I'm not surprised. They've had a really lean year and need to make every penny possible. Plus as you say much of the rental stock has probably been moved off-island.

The most I've ever paid for a rental car was $155 per day (base rate, plus taxes and fees) in Juneau, AK during the peak of tourist season about 15 years ago. Hotels were similarly at peak pricing of $350 a night for Motel 6 quality. That was one expensive business trip for my client.

When my sweetie took the credit from a covid canceled trip in January and looked for a July ticket she was horrified to find that a round trip would be over $800, about double her credit. And rental car was brutal as well. I guess it says something about how much we miss the islands that we're biting the bullet and paying the piper.

I originally was expecting to lose 140,000 air miles that were about to expire, so I booked a trip, even though I knew better. Of course, after I put deposits on everything, Hawaiian Airlines relaxed their policy on expiring air miles. Can't get my money back without penalty. Part of the deal these days. I better have a great time.

Have a great trip!

I miss the islands (and my former home of Alaska) but I have vowed to never fly commercial airlines again. No destination is worth the hassle and indignities of travel these days. That means passing on the beauty of these places, music camps, and friends in nice places. It also means that nearly 50,000 miles on Alaska Airlines will evaporate over the next year - unless my wife uses them to visit Alaska.

There are a few charities that accept flyer miles. Don't waste them.

I'll keep that in mind as the expiration date approaches. Alaska Airlines wanted a fairly ridiculous fee to simply move the miles to my wife's account. I hope that she can use them for something before then by logging into my account.

I don't know about the islands, but I hear that there is no U-Haul moving truck or trailer to be found anywhere in NY or CA these days as people flee those areas.
