Papalua, the Hawaiian word
meaning "twice as much", aptly describes the two guitars and two
voices of the duo formed by Darin and Andy.
Darin Leong
Born and raised in Honolulu, Darin has performed at Carnegie Hall
and entertained Hawai`i Governor Linda Lingle. As a member of Ho`olapa,
Darin played many of the hotels on O`ahu, including the Kahala
Mandarin and Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Waikiki. Darin continued his
musical training under the guidance of guitarists Barry Flanagan (Hapa),
Lisa Smith, and Bobby Moderow (Maunalua). Rooted in the learning
gained in Hawai`i, Darin set off to college to obtain a classical
music degree from Pomona College in California. After four years of
classical guitar training under surfing legend Jack Sanders, Darin
made his way east to New York City.
Andy Wang
With family ties to the island of O`ahu,
Andy developed an
insatiable love for Hawaiian music and the fingerstyle tradition of ki ho`alu. For over a decade, he has regularly returned to Hawai`i to study with a host of Hawaiian slack key guitar masters including
Ozzie Kotani, Keola Beamer, and George Kahumoku, Jr. Andy has become an ambassador of this art, delighting audiences across the east coast.
