I wen bought Leds video wit da kine Bob Brosman, inside had one tab sheet but dis bugga no make cents, any braddahs o sitas get tab fo dis? Like da odda sista says fo da fingas NOT da notes. BTW dis da firs pos I wen make so no laugh.

I just tried playing through the tab, "Melody and Turnaround" section, and without firing up the video to check details it sounds pretty close to me.
I would say this is a pretty advanced piece.

A tie is used (in my very limited understanding of standard notation) to connect two instances of the same note to maintain standard timing indications while crossing bar lines or to indicate an unusual time value. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tie_%28music%29 So this is an unorthodox (perhaps even incorrect) use of a tie.
But I'm pretty sure the intention is simply that you let the first harmonic ring while you play the second, at least that's what I do. Check the video and I think you'll see Ledward is doing the same thing.

In these cases the fourth string note is a bass note, being played by the thumb, and the slide starts unplucked, it's a slide to the note indicated, without the starting note being specified or plucked. If you watch the video carefully you'll see Ledward execute this move.
It seems perhaps that you're working from the tab as your primary source?? I would recommend devoting more time to the video and using the tab to supplement.

Aloha,
I was looking at the tab for Slack Key Lullabye that comes with this video and there were a few things that I couldn't understand. If anyone can help, I would appreciate it. In measure 4 of the Third Melody (and in the last two measures in the Final Version) it looks like a twelfth fret harmonic on the third string is tied to a twelfth fret harmonic on the second string. I don't understand how notes on different strings can be tied together, or is something else being implied? In measures 13, 18, 37, & 39 it looks like the tab is calling for a slide from a fourth string note to a third string note. I'm I just misreading this? Does it just mean that that the player is supposed to slide up to the up to the third string note from some lower pitch on that string? |

Dear Mike,
I tabbed Ku`uipo Onaona from one of Led's Dancing Cat cds - gave the original to Led and kept my name off the tab. Great piece to play in Taro Patch.

You have to scroll down to the section on "Hawaiian Slack Key" and then download a whole folder with several songs, one of which is the one you're looking for. I think you also have to install the Tabledit program to read it.
This tablature is, if I recall, similar to Led's recording on the "Led Live" CD, with a swing rhythm. His CD with Brozman "In the Saddle" has this song with more of a straight-time rhythm. You can work it out once you have the tab. Of course, Led plays it different every time.
That Tabledit program also allows your computer to "play" a rendition of the tabbed music, although as Reid pointed out a few years ago, it comes out sounding like "manic RoboLed".
That colorful phrase stuck in my mind, which is how I was able to search up our previous forum thread discussing this topic here.

I'm looking at the tab that came in that video and it's some of the clearest I've ever seen. What's missing is an explanation of their conventions.
The horizontal lines represent strings. Top line is 1st (highest pitch, closest to the floor) string, bottom line is 6th. Numbers represent frets. 0 is open, unfretted, 1 is first fret, etc.
Note duration is indicated with standard notation flags, ties, etc.
Does that help?
I strongly recommend that you start with "Slack Key Lullaby" which is slow and sweet and will help you see how the tab relates to the playing in the video.

Would that be Bob's Homespun video Ukulele Tunes & Tecniques? Mine comes with the tab as part of the video,as a CDRom file to be printed out. The earlier version had a tab booklet. Bob uses an ADF#B tuning on his uke in the video I have. If that's the case, you can use the GCEA tuning, and play all the same positions he uses, but you'll have to capo at the 2nd fret to sound in the same key he's in. I'm not quite sure which tuning Led uses in his part of the video. ( I'm NEVER sure what Led does, on ANY instrument. Maybe 4-5 years from now.)
Or are you talking of a different video than I have?

all playing aside I picked up Kiho'alu this year I have maybe ten songs I can play alright, I have Ozzie,s first dvd and I bought the Led cd Of course Led is phenomanal but the teaching part is a little hard to follow, I felt like Bob should have let Led teach the song. Does anyone have a tab for this song they did on their own? Let me know email me sanclementemike @ yahoo.com
