I just finished watching video of Led Kaapana doing a version of Manuela Boy. A couple of the verses are originally from a calypso song out of Trinidad.
Here are the verses in question

Her name is Haunani Ho
I told my papa and he said no
Haunani is your sister but your mama don't know
I told my mama what my papa had said

Does anyone know when these were added to manuela boy? They do not seem to appear in the original Johnny Noble version but Led did not just add them on the spot a couple nights ago either.

There is also a similar song, from the girl's perspective by Buffy St.Marie, called Johnny Be Fair:

Her version has a much more Appalachian character. There are versions on YouTube. Who first put the verses into Manuela boy, I'm not sure. But listening to Led live or on recordings, it's obvious he listened to a lot more than Hawaiian music. Thesre's a lot of different music flowing through his repertoire.

This seems like the verse that Led added is listed.
Bill Tapia on his "Duke of Uke" CD from a few years ago does the same verse as Led did that night.
I have a dozen versions of this song in my music collection. It seems like every one that was recorded is different. None the same as any of the rest, and only one that is mostly like the way the original lyrics were written.
