Not sure if I can make this one...but just wanted to say/
Fran, good to see you brah. You've been a bit quiet for a few months.
Okay, these folks at YOUR house? I'm a bit envious! I just saw the post and I doubt theres a snowball's chance in...anyway that I'll be able to get that evening off from work. I'll know tomorrow.
Good to hear from you again brother.

I've been reading regularly, just haven't had a lot to say. Howzit with you these days, hope things are smoothing along.
I was really stoked when Patrick asked about doing a workshop here. We've had a few house concerts, but this is the first time we've hosted any Hawaiian artists, and a workshop is even better than a show, to me. I hope you'll be able to find a few inches and make the event. I'm working up a new recipe for Coconut Macadamia Shortbread Brownies, and I'll need plenty of help making them disappear.

Aloha Cathe!
You will get a little bit of everything! We plan to cover at least two tunings, scales, as well has hear from Milton Lau, founder and organizer of the Slack Key Festival on the Islands, he is very knowlegable as well. I think this will be a great workshop!! Beginners to advance, everyone will learn something..this is a great opportunity!

We had us a time, folks. The workshop focussed on the importance of slack key "scales" - patterns of 3rds and 6ths up and down the neck on each pair of strings. Patrick demonstrated "Kuhoku Slack Key" then he and Kavika explained the fingering patterns and showed how the slack key scales related to the song. Then Kavika demonstrated his use of open D tuning (DADF#AD) and pointed out the new scales in the new tuning. This tuning has such a big, deep sound!
My only complaint, and it happens time and again - I bake all day, then a bunch of guitar players come over and ignore the food - they just wanna play guitar, talk guitar, listen to guitar - and I wind up having to eat macadamia shortbread coconut brownies for breakfast. At least I got a few folks to try the lemon buttermilk sherbert. I bet they're still puckered up <grin>.
Anyway, thanks to everybody who came, and especially thanks to the artists. It was a memorable evening. And you folks in San Diego are in for a treat.

Boy that was fun! Mahalo to you, Fran for hosting the event. I went home and practised the new "inners" until 2:00am. It was great not only to watch those guys play together, but come to a new comprehension about how to structure improvization.
and yeppers, my lips are still puckered up from that delicious sorbet..... <smack> |

Mahalo Fran, Thanks for hosting and feeding us desserts.
La Patisserie de Fran Guidry
What'd we have, like 6 different desserts? yikes!
Yeah, that buttermilk-Lemon Sherbet was out of this world!
The scales lesson was fantastic, and yes, basic. But I've been stuck on the 1 & 3 strings so need the reminders all the time.
Mahalo to Patrick, Kavika, Mike, Milton.

Thanks to everyone who fought the traffic on a Friday evening. It sure was a lot of fun for me, and a great honor to host these artists. I've had a few guitar parties and house concerts here, but this was certainly my favorite so far.
