Attention all Bay Area Uke Nuts and Slack Key Folks !
The renowned NORTHERN CALIFORNIA UKULELE FESTIVAL is returning for the eleventh time !
This is the best show in town in April for any kind of Hawaiian music in the SF Bay Area.
Folks even fly over from Hawaiian every year to participate.
(The not-so-secret rule is that at least one person in each performance has to at least "appear" to be playing an ukulele)
THAT MEANS you will find every conceivable instrument played (yes- even a Glockenspiel or Flugelhorn as well as Slack Key) at this event. 25 Bands (or groups) will play throughout the day. Dozens of vendors of Hawaiiana, Ukes, Tahitian Ukes, Flukes, Clothing, etc, etc. show up each year.
Most of the performers are Amateur, but there are plenty of Pro's who show up (some from Hawaii) and play for the fun of it.

Aloha Cathe and Lawrence and Cynthia et al, (Da's Hawaiian for y'all ) Our kumu Michelle Kiba has a time slot of 2:30, so we will be there in the afternoon. Sadly, I have to drop of our good friend Dennis Lake at the airport on the way up to Hayward, so he won't be there. I'm hoping to have some $$ saved up so I can drool over all those little ukuleles and maybe take home another one... |

Hey Lawrence -
I was in and out of the Hayward festival in a dead run last Sunday. I think I saw you for a moment but never got close enough to say "hi." Darn.
Yow, big event!
The highlight? For me it was watching Bill Tapia arrive in a very cool PT Cruiser Woody.
cheers,

Yo Mark,
I saw you on stage with Donley backing up the "UFO's" if I am not mistaken. You dissappeared after that.
Highlights of the show for me were:
1) Bill Taupia with his "Duo". Lyle Ritz was not even supposed to be at the show, but unexpectedly joined the duo making it a delightful trio.
2) Lyle filling in for some missing groups in the morning with a solo set.
3) Of course, Hiram Bell's Group (H.U.I.) with my other half up there on uke and vocals.
4) James Hill (I think was his name) who showed up later than scheduled but did the most interesting and complex stuff and got a 5 minute ovation with 2 Hana-hou's.
5) Ka Ehu Kai - who are always outstanding with Tennyson Lum demonstrating he still has the fastest Uke fingers in the west (with some added phasing effects this time). They did some "bluegrass" numbers that you might want to call "pakalolo style" bluegrass. (Forced to do 2 Hana-hou's as well)
6) The Side Order band - with an absolutely outstanding modern Hula Halau (2nd place winners at Merrie Monarch). (These guys had to do 3 Hana-hou's) I am very grateful that Chris Kamaka comes over each year with a Kamaka ukulele contingent and gives away an Uke that is custom made just for this event.
All for 5 bucks - and a great 6 dollar lunch too.
