           	| When we got back from our last trip to the islands I decided I needed a "business" card that reflected my interest in music, so I wouldn't have to scratch through and scribble on my regular computer nerd card. I did a snapshot of a guitar and ukulele, put on my web site, email address, and phone number, and for heading I came up with "Kanikapila I Kaleponi." I've never been sure if I got that right - should it be "Kanikapila O Kaleponi??" Or something else entirely, to express the idea that I live in California and would like to jam on Hawaiian music?
 Thanks,
 Fran

                      | The "I" denotes a forward motion...so that translation would loosely be "Jammin' to California" :-)
Better to use Kanikapila O Kaleponi to denote that you are "Jammin' _in_ California", yes?

                      | Thanks so much, Auntie Maria. And thanks, as always for the quick work on my last order.

                      | Aloha e Fran laua 'o Auntie Maria,
Both of you know I can't help but weigh in on a question like this one. :-) Eia ku'u mana'o:

The word "i" indicates either location or, as Auntie says, motion towards. (It also indicates a direct object, but that's another story.) "Ma" would work, too; "ma" also indicates location, but not motion towards. "O", on the other hand, is possessive.

My take is that "Kanikapila i Kaleponi" or "Kanikapila ma Kaleponi" would convey what Fran wants to say.

 aloha no,
 Sarah
