Aloha All!
Just wanted to announce the 2nd Annual Pacific Northwest Institute of Hawaiian Music and Culture in Seattle! This year we have added two new classes, a Hawaiian Language class and a Hawaiian Songs class. We are growing and hope to be in Arizona and East Coast by this year! Here's the info!
What: 2nd Annual Institute of Hawaiian Music and Culture
Where: Greenwood Senior Center, 525 N.85th Street, Seattle WA
When: April 1-2
Time: Class times range from 9:00am-3:00pm depending on class you choose
Each class is two days 2 hours a day
Cost: $125 Registration fee - includes one class and materials. Each additional class is $50. All materials are covered in cost

I just finished the two-day institute with Patrick and gang at the Greenwood senior center in Seattle. It was great fun, both to learn more about Hawaiian music and see Taropatch ohana in person. Attending from TP.net were Retro, Dr. Cookie, Karl Monetti, dshelby, kihoalukid, mark e, neeej and others I'm probably forgetting. The weekend started with the Masters of Slack Key concert Friday night, then classes Saturday and Sunday. Saturday night many retired to the Kona Kitchen for Hawaiian style food and music by local singers and dancers. Well into the evening of fun, Dennis Kamakahi arrived for his birthday (53rd) celebration. After very little coaxing he took a guitar and David K accepted Rod Lopez' uke for a set that stretched to an hour or more. He sang Koke'e, Wahine Ilikea, Po'e Koa, and many other songs. David sang NYC Song and played some catchy licks behind Uncle Dennis. It was very late when Dennis stepped down and Patrick played a few songs and it was time for "Hawai'i Aloha". There was some beautiful hula and beautiful voices singing. The talented Roddy Lopez played bass most of the night but took the guitar to sing "Uluwehi o ke Kai" while Bobo Miles, our language and song teacher for the weekend, danced.
If you haven't met Bobo yet, you will find he is a treasure chest of culture and Hawaiian language. A trained musician with a beautiful tenor voice with falsetto range who studied voice with Kahauanu Lake. He speaks and teaches Hawaiian language. He taught the song class three Kahauanu Lake classics, helping us shape the words and sing them exactly on pitch and explained the songs, too. He's a recent transplant to the mainland and brings a wealth of knowledge and such love for the music that it's infectious.

Aloha Jesse, you are hereby appointed official scribe . . . nice summary (and I hope your posting means you're holed up somewhere comfortable instead of racing back home).
Patrick's institute is a wonderful program . . . and I, too, really appreciate the opportunity to work with Bobo. I can't imagine a better way to spend a weekend . . . delightful . . . and I'm already ready for more!

It was nice to meet you, Don, and the rest of the the folks who made it to the workshop. It was fun. Perhaps we'll have more time to jam next time. I want to hear more of that Black Bear uke!

Hi KB23,
Bobo is from Waimanalo and has moved to the mainland to continue his education. He has been teaching music and Hawaiian language. He studied with Richard Ho'opi'i and Kahauanu Lake. He has a bachelor's degree in music and sings with a beautifully trained voice. He sang with the Kahauanu Lake Singers. He lives in Hayward, California.
I hope we hear recordings of Bobo soon. His falsetto is "chicken skin".

Bobo taught us "Kawena" by Kahauanu Lake and gave us insight into the song by talking about Tutu Kawena and what she means to Hawai'i. It was very cool to learn an Uncle K song by one of his which made us feel like we had a direct link to the kumu himself. He showed extreme care with the language and how it is parsed, pronounced and sung. He also emphasized the correct uke strum for each song. It was very inspiring. He works very hard when he teaches and it makes you to work harder. He's still pretty young (grad '87, I think) and I hope he comes back to the Northwest.

| I had to pleasure of seeing and hearing Bobo Miles perform with a couple of local musicians at Da Hukilau in Palo Alto about 2 weeks ago. As already stated by those that heard him in Seattle, he truly is a gifted vocalist, especially demonstrated that evening by his rendition of `Alika. He is currently conducting Hawaiian language and ukulele classes in the Berkeley and Santa Cruz areas. So if you ever get the opportunity to see him perform, don't hesitate... |

How did Bobo get here? Who is his connection to the Bay Area? How can I get into contact with him? Does any of you have contacts with him?

| Mikela, I believe Bobo was brought here by Patrick Landeza but that's just speculation on my part. I , too, just returned from Seattle. Great to finally meet Jesse, thumbs, dr. cookie, Mark E. retro and kihoalu kid, and Jean Smith (neej, to you)among others. The Satruday evening event for Dennis was really a wonderful "concert" of great female vocalists (Evilani K, and the songing waitress at Kona kitchen, and "the big gal from GiG harbor", a real Big Mama Thornton in a mumu), local hula, Dennis and David, Roddy Lopez Sr and Jr, local slide wizard Jack Aldrich, Uncle Danny, Kiko. It went on fromm about 7:30 until pat 11.
The workshop was great, especially the time spent with Bobo Miles (kb23, i think he got here by plane).
Seattle is a grat town, lots of wondrful folks, and never a discouraging word:)

Hey ArtSap, I hope Bobo's gig at Hukilau was good because he blew out his voice and could barely sing in Seattle. But we could tell he had da kine falsetto. Because he's classically trained, he knows how to take care of his vocal chords and won't be singing much for the next week or two.

| Jesse, yes indeed - Bobo's gig was excellent! He was fine afterward as we sat around and talked story and Sil and I even showed him how to get home from the gig. I think he mentioned that he had to go up to Sacramento the following week so that may be where his voice troubles started. Not to mention all of this horrible weather we've been having lately... |

Aloha Everyone!
It was indeed a great weekend! and the Bobo Miles thread..yes it was I that brought in Bobo Miles from Hawaii to teach for the Institute, there are many talented musicians in Hawaii that just need a opportunity to come here. I will be bringing others from Hawaii just like Bobo to help with the Bay Area Institute of Hawaiian Music and Culture.
Jesse always good top see you and Karl, sorry we didn't hook up for a lesson but I really appreciate you flying in from Alaska! Dr. Cookie, I just ate one of the cookies you gave me and it was delicious..your Dennis Kamakahi cookie was Hilarious!
Overall this was a great weekend, we will have new teachers next year and will be going to the mid-west and east coast within the year.

Aloha Kakou,
I'd like to thank all my students for being patient with me at the rescheduling of class during the workshops due to the concert scheduling during my Seattle stay. I had a great time meeting everyone and it was the best birthday I've ever celebrated. Keep up the playing. Some of you in my intermediate class definitely should consider the advanced slack key classes which I will be teaching at the next scheduled workshop in Seattle. Advance class will cover fine tuning your playing around your solo passages as well as the introduction to the C Maunaloa tuning.
From David and I, a heartfelt mahalo for making teaching slackkey and ukulele a fun and enriching experience.
