We've been lucky enough to get concert and artist information from Auntie Maria here on the 'Patch. I would guess that many of us have bought CDs and videos from Mele.com. We were lucky enough to close the circle and meet Auntie and Bob in person last night, and it was some fun. Auntie suggested we meet at the Hanalei Bay Resort, where Lady Ipo Kahaunaele performs on Tuesday evenings with her group. Good call, Auntie!!
Lady Ipo is such a singer, bass player Kalani Flores plays great and brings classic swing influenced arrangements, Garret Santos keeps the chord changes moving, and Maka Harrod shows what kane hula is all about. This is one powerhouse group, folks, and if you're like me you never heard of them. Fortunately, Lady Ipo has created a CD based on an out-of-print cassette recording, so we can carry some of her music with us.
Thanks so much, Auntie Maria, that was really a special evening.

What fun to finally meet Fran and the lovely Lynn in person! Tuesday night at Hanalei Bay Resort (which is actually in Princeville), is always good music, good hula, and yummmmmy food. My only warning is, pour on the bug spray -- with all our rains, the evening mosquito population is thriving!
Let me fill in some more info about the folks we saw, 'kay? Lady Ipo Kahaunaele-Freitas is the momma of the very talented Na Hoku Hanohano Award winning singer/composer/musician, Kainani Kahaunaele. Kainani's only solo CD thus far is the awesome "Na`u `Oe". Lady Ipo sells a CD of her own, at the Tuesday night shows.
Guitarist Garrett Santos is grandson of the late illustrious politician/composer/musician, Jacob Maka.
Uncle Kalani Flores has been a professional musician & composer in Hawai`i for over 40 years -- playing behind some of the biggest names in Hawaiian and non-Hawaiian music throughout the islands. You can hear him on the CD, "Bunny Brown's Hilo Hawaiians".
Maka "Shaka-laka-maka" Harrod has been teaching hula on Kaua`i for a long time -- and just completed his final `uniki, so is now an official, fo'real "kumu hula". Funny, talented dancer/singer/musician.
So if you're heading to Kaua`i, do yourself a favor and come up to the northshore on a Tuesday night. |

Good news -- Lady Ipo's only album (originally recorded in 1983, only on cassette) is now available from this online retailer.
