Aloha kakou e `ohana,
Time again for our open mic, Tuesday, May 9 at:
Mission City Coffee Roasting Co, 2221 The Alameda, in Santa Clara
Take The Alameda, north, off of 880 and it's about two long blocks on your left (just before the Alameda makes the big swing around Santa Clara University)
Signups, as always, will be at 6:30 PM and the first act will be at 7:15. We also have a bit more latitude on time. We don't have to be finished until 10:00.
Thank you once again to Mission City and Sun Jose Hawai`i for sponsoring this event
Mahalo,
Kawiks

Once again, it was an outstanding night. Thanks to all the musicians and on-lookers, to Lawerence for PA, and especially to Julie and Larry for the flowers and bamboo screens. Our Sun Jose Hawaii gift certificate winners were Aunty Ella and Doug (PearlCityBoy).
I'll post pictures this afternoon.
Mahalo,

Aloha Big Dog, thanks for an interesting evening. I have to say unabashedly that we really screwed up on our two songs, probably because we were both so tired and under the weather with colds threatening. Luckily for us nobody had rotten tomatoes to throw at us.
May I make a suggestion? As I looked at Jerry and Auntie who came all the way from Vacaville and had to drive all the way back late at night, it became clear that the evening was lasting too long. Maybe, with an eye toward those who have long drives home, it might be wiser to limit the songs per act to two or three. And it is really difficult to leave before the end of all the performances, God forbid we look rude! So maybe in consideration, we should curtail our enthusiasm, and if there is time left over, we could plan for a one or two song play along at the end. That's always a lot of fun.
My two cents worth. And thanks for the encouragement, and for allowing for adjustments to the new space.
Lots of aloha, Julie |

Dearest Julie,
I don't think it is a good idea to shorten the event because some folks have to drive a long way home. They are adult's and know how far they have to go.
After all, there are also some folks who cannot make it by 7:15PM, some even come as late as 8:30. We wouldn't want them to miss anything either would we?
If we take your suggestion seriously then the event should only go from 8:30PM to 9:00PM! It is perfectly understandable that some folks may have to leave before the end (or arrive after the start).
The longer the event is, the better it is, simply because it allows more people to participate. Individual folks can come and go as they may wish or need to.
Personally, I am happy for it to go to 10PM. If it went later I would have to leave before the end myself, but it would be OK with me if it went on longer after I left.
I.M.H.O.
P.S. - About half the folks last nite did only TWO songs and the other half did three or four, so the average was darned close to three anyway.
Nicest thing was the we had a pretty good turnout of both peformers AND audience. And we also had some nice foliage and decorative screens presenting a tropical backdrop for everyone's enjoyment, thanks to an angel who dropped them by just in time.
Anyone else have an opinion about a good time to end?

I appreciate both of your comments, though I tend to agree more with Lawerence. I am honored that you are both concerned enough to voice your opinions. In actuality, I'm in testing mode right now. Because of the extended time we get at Mission City and given that we had nine signups, I allowed for a maximum of 20 minutes, knowing that some people would play two songs only and others might go a little longer. As it turned out, we were right at the 180 min mark when we were done. Of course after breaking down and schmoozing, some of us got out of there at 10:00. As it will happen in the future, what will we do with 15 signups? It happened more than once at EG and it was a mini nightmare, with disgruntled folks who got one song to play.
I really don't have a problem with somebody coming late or leaving early. I think that all of us understand that this is for fun, and that occasionally we have lives that preclude us from staying 'til the end. Julie, I understand that you had a vested interest in staying so you could recover your property. I greatly appreciate what you do for the Hawaiian community in general with your generosity of visual enhancement. Mahalo, but if you need to leave, then let's find a way to help rather than hinder. Everyone will understand.
Lawrence, with your IMHO, you did mean Honest instead of Humble, pololei?
We've had some really good nights over the last year, but I though that Tuesday was Da Kine. I'm very proud of all of you. You've come a long way Keep coming back.
Please let me know what you want out of this. My job is to keep it rolling.
Me ke aloha,
Dave |

Two cents from Cowtown, Speaking only for Auntie Ella and myself, we are both retired and ending time is just fine with us. We are usually home by around 11pm and the trafic is much easier heading home than coming down. No problemo, stay as sweet as you are and mahalo for a job well done. Sulle' |

Coming from San Fran I agree with Sulle'. It's the getting there that tough. You never know what the traffic may be.
Depending on my rotating work schedule I may come late, or not at all and I may have to leave early too. If I get there late and too late to sign up then I get to watch everyone else perform. Time is related to set-up and how long the song is. More people and instruments, more time for set up. If you sing and can pani a short song can be lengthen (or sing Akaha Falls with two modulations and vocally sustain the last note for the length of a verse or play long beginning and ending uke vamps.)
Overall I did think time was okay. And if it looks like a lot of performers how about starting performance at 7:00pm. Maybe you can judge this by how fast the sign ups fill.

OK, fair enough. I guess I'm just feeling my age since I have YET another birthday next week. They seem to be coming in droves nowadays! I did enjoy myself, but was rather dragging that night. We drive 2 to 2.5 hours each day to and from work, and it gets really old. But next time, I know I have some flexibility about coming and leaving. Thanks for your input everyone. And thanks for all the work getting it set up and amplified, etc, etc. Aloha nui, Julie |

It was great to be back at the open mic to play some slack key after a couple of months hiatus. I hope my guitar sounded OK--I just had it repaired after last month's Cowtown calamity. I like the new venue, and Julie's bamboo screen, plants, and decorations really gave it a nice Hawaiian feel. Mahalo Julie for lugging everything to the coffee shop.
I think we should keep the start and end times as is. It takes me over an hour to get to Santa Clara, and the three-hour open mic provides ample time and flexibility for the performers. Even though we ended earlier this time, I would be game for some kanikapila with the extra time. With the quality of performers, I bet the jam session would be entertaining for the audience too. I also think that over time, we'll have more than enough performers to fill up the three hours. In fact, there were some musicians in the crowd this last time who didn't perform.
Bruddah Dave, thanks for coordinating the open mic, and I really appreciate your willingness to hear our suggestions and comments. I agree with you that the performers/performances are getting very good. It really is quality entertainment. How could you not be moved by bruddah Sil's rendition of Akaka Falls? Talk about da kine!
See y'all next month.
Aloha,
Doug
