I got a last minute invite to play with a couple of my Hawaiian buddies at the Kona Country Club last night. I usually play bass, but they asked me to bring my little baritone ukulele sized lap steel in my favorite G6th tuning. Uncle Donna has been playing professionally for 30 years or more, and has a great voice and does a lot of swing and jazz in addition to all the classic Hawaiian songs.
Bruddah George is playing a 4 string Walkingbass that I made for him 3 years ago.

Shirley caught us on the little camera, and I stuck in on Y-Tube:

It is great to see you playing and having so much fun. My visit to Kona this past Jan/Feb I got the chance to meet uncle Donna and played with him at the same place with Art Akina on bass. After the gig we went to Huggo's and closed the place. That man has so much energy I tell you.

Hi guys!
It was made under the watchful eye of Dennis Lake - honestly, I could never have done it by myself! But yes, I actually did mostly all the work on it.
I do have a couple of photos. Dennis suggested that I first buy a Baritone Ukulele case, and then we designed the instrument to fit the case.
It has a heavy square neck like a dobro, it is well braced with a guitar pyrimid type bridge. Bob Brozman told me about stainless steel saddles a few
years ago, and I used one on this guitar. The pickup is a jazz humbucker made by Lindy Fralin. No internal electronics. Just a coil and a jack.
Notice my "shameless self promotion". Actually the pickup started out in that position, but I realized it was not a great place for the pickup, and
ended up making the nameplate to cover a few small holes.
It sure travels well!

Aloha,

Konabob - wowie! It is absolutely beautiful -- and sounds way swell. Does it have fret wires? Looks kinda like one of those Keola Beamer guitars.

Yes, it does have wire frets, although on a lap steel, they never actually touch the strings. And, yes, I have always admired the engineering on Keola Beamers guitars.
It is really fun to play, (the steel guitar never leaves you with sore fingers), and since there aren't too many steel players left here in Hawaii, it gets me a lot of interesting gigs!

Not many steel players here in Seattle, either, which gave me time to figure out what I need to do to play Hawaiian (with help from Alan Akaka when I visit Hawaii & from Henry Allen's material) and the Ohana here (Danny Kaopuiki, Iwalane Kamahele, Thumbstruck, etc). Interesting gigs here, too.

Beautiful instrument. Dennis is a good mentor and kind heart too. I bet you are proud of that instrument. You seem to have a way of innovating and coming up with something new. That is good for the genre and it keeps things fresh.

What is the scale length of your little guitar Konabob? Is it a standard 22 1/2 inch??

Regards BILL
