Aloha e Lopaka,
You should come to one of the "local" kanikapilas that happen around the SF Bay area every month or two (no fixed schedule). The last one I know of was at Bwop's place in La Honda. Kanikapila's have so far occurred in Marin, Palo Alto, Sunnyvale, Boulder Creek, Ben Lomond, Vacaville and other places. Sounds like you are good enough to jam or you can get folks to show you stuff, etc.

Mahalo Lawrence... I will watch out for upcoming kanikapilas. It would be a great way to meet others in the Bay Area and learn. -Bob |

Aloha everyone!
My name is Alan Sidlo, I live in Chicago, and I first came across taropatch.net while I was investigating the possibilities of growing taro and making my own poi up here in the mainland (earlier this summer). It was annoying at first to come across the occasional slack key or ukulele post as I googled around for botanical information, though I do remember reading through a thread or two because I’ve enjoyed island music for quite some time.
Then a week ago I decided to learn something about music (as I am not practiced in any instrument at the moment). Naturally I found myself gravitating to the slack key sound that my wife and I so enjoy, so now it looks like I’ll be learning how to play the guitar.
Realizing that this isn’t the simplest of endeavors, it’s so nice to have somewhere to go to find out what others have to say about their own journey and experiences. The sense of community here really comes through in the threads; it’s the kind of sharing that is only realized through music…
BTW, we’re really looking forward to the "Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Masters" at the Old Town School of Folk Music in a couple of weeks!

Aloha Alan, I was born and lived in Lawndale/Pilsen/Little Village(near Kedzie & 26th.) Now living in CA. though I still get back to visit family. Rent a guitar for a month or so, ge Ozzie's book/CD and jump in the water. It's nice in here. Raymond San Jose |

Hi,
My name is Darin. I just discovered this website and it is very encouraging. I love music, love guitars, and love Hawaii. This site seems wonderful for all of it.
My initial instruction on the guitar was slack key. Then I shipped off to college and studied classical. I play some folk and singer-songwriter, and have fallen mostly into the fingerstyle camp. Early instructors for Hawaiian music were Barry Flanagan, Bobby Moderow (Maunalua), Lisa Smith.
I grew up in Hawaii. At the moment I live in New York.
Nice to meet you all!

Welcome everyone. This thread inspired the "Introduce yourself" forum. I am locking this topic so that future introductions can be created as new posts.
Aloha! |
