Aloha All,

Last month we celebrated the 5th anniversary of our Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Concert Series at the Napili Kai Beach Resort on Maui. The night of October 22 was our 261st consecutive weekly show – we’ve never missed one. It was a wonderful event with a packed house of concertgoers and our invited guests. We began with a wonderful oli by Clifford Nae’ole, who gave us our start five years ago at the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua. The show that followed featured Ledward Kaapana, Uncle Richard Ho’opi’I, Kevin Brown, Peter deAquino and Sterling Seaton and, of course, our host, George Kahumoku Jr.

When Wayne Wong and I packed up our belongings and our cars and moved to Maui in 2003 we had high hopes for the show. I was advised by many people with experience doing Hawaiian music that the concert series was a truly crazy idea and just could not work as a business. Five years later I have to say that those people were absolutely correct. I guess if I’d had the good sense that God gave gravel, I would have paid attention. But then I’d have missed out on one of the most wonderful experiences of my life.

So we carry on with our labor of love. Times are tough in Hawaii right now with big declines in visitor counts. We’re hanging in there, though, and the show goes on. Here’s our schedule for the rest of the year. Note that the last two shows of 2008 will be on Tuesday instead of our usual Wednesday. This is so our staff and artists don’t have to work on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. In 2009 all shows will be on Wednesday evening again.

November 12 – Dennis Kamakahi
November 19 – Ledward Kaapana
November 26 – Jeff Peterson
December 3 – Dennis Kamakahi
December 10 – Owana Salazar
December 17 – Ledward Kaapana
December 23 (Tuesday) – Kevin Brown
December 30 (Tuesday) – Keoki Kahumoku
