My wife Denise and I got back from our recent visit to O'ahu this Sunday the 16th. We spent lots of time with our dear friend Lynn who has a couple of website many of you are familiar with. She posted this in her last newsletter;

Aloha kakou,

Some dear friends just returned home to California after another 10-day visit here on O’ahu. As is always the case when they visit, we spent a lot of time going to hear music – and it reminded me just how lucky I am to live here (as if I somehow forgot?). There’s a wealth of talent here in Hawai’i nei, and on O’ahu you can go to hear Hawaiian music every night of the week – FREE. To give you an idea, here are SOME of the bands/musicians we saw during their 10-day stay – all of the concerts/shows were free, although one required the purchase of dinner:

Pali
Mike Keale
Olomana (with Jerry Santos, and Barry Kimokeo sitting in for Ryan Tang)
Pilioha
Maunalua
Hoku Zuttermeister (with Ioane Burns)
John Cruz
Ku’uipo Kumukahi and the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame Serenaders (Isaac Akuna, Kimo Stone, Uncle Joey Winchester)
Kaukahi
Keoki Kahumoku
Uncle Moses Kahumoku (asked by Keoki to join him on his trip here from Hawai’i Island)
Uncle Eddie Kamae
Ocean Kaowili
Paul Kim
Del Beazley (dropped by to see Ocean K.)
Na Kama
Nathan Aweau
Na Leo
Na Palapalai
Ho’okena

As noted above, you never know else you might see when you go to hear someone, or what might be in store...

In addition to the list above Lynn forgot to include some people we saw when we were off on our own;

The Keawe Ohana at the Marriott featuring Alan Akaka on steel

and

Kanoe Miller's Sunset Hula show at the Halekulani's beautiful and historic venue "The House Without a Key".

If I only had time to do one thing in Waikiki I would see Kanoe Miller's show. It is so filled with the grace, beauty and nostalgic feelings of old Waikiki that it makes it a "must see" event.

Fortunately, we had a lot more time availiable and as noted by the list above we saw just an incredible amount of music while we were there, all of it just simply outstanding.

Lynn, thank you so much for being the best "tour guide" O'ahu has to offer.

Me Ke Aloha Pumehana,

Norman & Denise

<<Olomana (with Jerry Santos, and Barry Kimokeo sitting in for Ryan Tang) >>

Small but important correction -- that isn't Olomana.

Olomana began in 1973 when a mutual friend suggested that Jerry Santos and Robert Beaumont team up. Wally Suenaga and Willy Paikuli were added about 5 years later. After Robert's passing in 1982, Haunani Apoliona eventually joined the group. Ryan Tang would often "fill" whenever Wally or Haunani could not appear at their gigs. The full Olomana bio is here:
http://www.olomanamusic.com/about_olomana.html

Earlier this year when the Hilton Hotel closed their Paradise Lounge -- where Olomana had been performing every Friday and Saturday night for over a decade -- Jerry was relocated to the hotel's much smaller Tapa Bar. That area has room for just two musicians...usually Jerry and Ryan Tang now. And just on Friday nights. Drat.

You can also catch Jerry -- with Barry Kimokeo and Hoku Zuttermeister -- Monday nights at Chai's Bistro (Aloha Tower Marketplace).

Interesting how names are still being used. On the November 2008 Entertainment calendar for the Hilton Hawaiian Village, they list the act as "Olomana" every Friday Night for the month of November. I wonder if it's Jerry's decision to keep the name.

Ima tellin you not much of a better show can be had anywhere than Jerry, Hoku and that sweet Barry Kimokeo. Oh my goodness, the music. Between Jerry;s mele, his slack key, his talk story, Hoku's amazing voice, Barry's amazing guitar playing (he can make the guitar sound like anykine). You can tell these guys love their music.

The three playing at Chai's on May 22, 2008. When they do the one about singing old Hawaiian songs and then they take turns each of them just off the top of their head, jumping into a song and the others have to follow. Hoh, great fun and they could go for hours. Jerry said they could (and usta) go all night long like that back and forth.

See the look on Jerry's face. You can tell he loves what he is doing, and it shows in his music. Not only is he a spectacular musician, but what a song writer, a story teller through his songs.

Aloha,

I agree that you can't get better than these three wonderful musicians. Better still, on their break, go up and introduce yourself. You will find that there isn't a nicer bunch of gentlemen anywhere on the planet. Jerry is so full of wonderful stories, and Kimokeo is one of the happiest and most polite young gentleman you'll ever come across. And then there's Hoku, he's so nice too. Jerry and the boys are regulars at Chai's every Monday evening.

You're so sweet! And you're very welcome, but it was my pleasure - you know how much I love seeing/spending time with the two of you, even though you're a very bad influence and turned me toward a life of crime (B&E? 2nd story girl?...)

Before Pakele started last night, I told Kawaikapu about your visit and all the music we heard, and how sorry you (and I) were that you missed being at last night's Pakele in person, but that you'd be watching online. I said "they'll just have to move here!"... and Kawaikapu said "No! They need to stay there and keep playing/promoting Hawaiian music for us on the mainland!" [By the way, for the approximately 6 gazillion of you who emailed to let me know how much you loved Kawaikapu's recent workshops in the Sacramento, CA area, he said he's planning to return!] Anyways, his comment about your promoting Hawaiian music was just another example of how much Hawai'i's musicians appreciate you and all you do to perpetuate the music and culture, on KAPU and with the interviews you post online, and the concerts and all the other events you two help put together... (But I still want you to move here - I'm sooo selfish that way!)

Kidding aside, the two of you epitomize the word aloha, you're pono in everything you do, your appreciation for and of all things Hawaiian is clearly evident, and you're just plain FUN to be around! (So when ya coming back???)

Me ko'u aloha,
Lynn

Ooo! P.S.! How could we forget to say we also saw the Abrigo Ohana? (Aloha Lanet!) SUCH a talented group of keiki... and the youngest is just the most adorable thing ever... (He was sooo cute when Uncle Eddie was singing to him - did Michi get that on video??? Or did you, Norm?)

re Jerry/Hoku/Barry - I agree with everyone else, of course, and I know Norm and Denise do, too. If you've never been to Chai's on Monday night, you're missing out! Try to go on a night when all three are there, though - sometimes Hoku's in Japan or on the mainland, and Barry isn't there if he's traveling with Makaha Sons. (Best way to know if Hoku will be there is to check out his website - the amazing and talented Kawikanui does a good job of keeping the calendar updated): http://www.hokuzuttermeister.com/

A special treat - in addition to the music and Jerry talking story and just a really good time in general (Jerry and Hoku are cousins, and it's obvious how much they love each other and love playing together) - during the break, they (especially Jerry) try to get around to every table to visit with everyone at least a little bit. And this past May, Robert Cazimero dropped in for dinner with friends - so of course he was asked to join in on a few songs with Jerry, Hoku, and Barry's cousin Kamuela (from Pilioha - he was sitting in for Barry). Robert and Hoku sang Ola'a Beauty, and their two voices together....it was pure chicken skin! Something I won't ever forget, and I'm soooo grateful I happened to be there that night!
