When we retired I bought a semi-fancy car with a navigation system so we could "road trip" all over California and points beyond. The car is now 5 years old and has fewer than 30,000 miles. It turns out that whenever we go anywhere it's an island far out in the Pacific, and the car just sits here.
But this year our island trip will be in the fall, so we're finally going to put a few miles on my baby. We'll be leaving Walnut Creek on the 21st and heading south on 101, sort of planning to return on the 31st. We have a few nights planned already, but most of the trip is fully flexible.
Are there any kanikapila or other format of Hawaiian music get together going on during the last days of March? If not, anyone have any ideas about putting something together? Anyone interested in a workshop, very beginner, very laid back? Or a house concert?
Please give a shout if you have any ideas, even if it's just a couple of us meeting on a park bench to play a few tunes.
Thanks, Fran

If you go North far enough you bump into Seattle and you never know what might happen. |

Aloha Fran,
Don't know how far south you are going but there is this restaurant in Carson, CA you might want to check out that seems to have music regularly on the weekend. It's called Back Home In Lahaina (http://www.backhomeinlahaina.com). Not really familiar with the music format but I met one of the guys that plays there sometimes and his band seemed to have a mixture of hawaiian and contemporary hawaiian. I know you were looking for a kanikapila but if you can't find one at least you can listen to some music.
Aloha, Ho'okani |

Nancy, you're the swellest. Thanks for your generous hospitality. I'm really looking forward to a genuine SoCal kanikapila. And thanks to folks who hit me with email about the SCSKS open mic meeting chowdown hang at Kaisen's Sushi, another legendary event that I'm looking forward to.
My guitar building buddy, Kathy Wingert, is hosting a house concert in Rancho Palos Verdes on the 28th as well. I'll put more details in another post.
Hot peanut oil, eh??? I don't know if I can cut my sweet potato chips thin enough without a mandolin ...

I understand that the name of the kitchen tool was given in honor of the finger slicing abilities of the musical instrument.

Since Lynn and I are together on this tour, certain compromises will be made. I'm up for the trips to wineries (did you know Lompoc has a winery row called the Lompoc Wine Ghetto?) I'm up for my first visit to Hearst Castle. I'm even up for lunch at Ivy or some other "star" spotting venue.
But Lynnie's real passion ... ribbon. It started innocently enough, with a few spools. Then more and more. Spool holders. Special scissors. More ribbon. What can she do with all that ribbon?????
...
These are two lei called Firecrackers.
A Haku Choker.
Plumeria.
Poinciana.
Purple Crocus.
It's been wonderful seeing these gorgeous lei grow in her hands.
...
But the ribbon ... is ... taking over ...
and she wants to be sure to visit these GREAT ribbon WAREHOUSES she has found in LA!!!

Indeed. The "Poinciana" one looks like a gift from Pele. |

The lei are definitely gifts of love. They take between 10 and 30 hours each, no one can afford to buy one at a non-insulting price ... so Lynnie gives them to her friends, hula sisters, visitors.
But did I mention the ribbon inventory ... ???
