| i actually attended this - but coming from Redondo Beach all the way out there I got there around 11:30 so most of the ukulele clubs had already performed. there were clubs from Cerritos, Loma Linda, Yucaipa, etc, nice to see some friends. after lunch was open mic and since i got there late i was pretty much the last to sign up so was the last to perform but it'd been a long day so a lot of the folks had filtered out by 3:00. small event, about 150 people, clubs all pitched in for lunch potluck style. not very ukulele oriented though, especially during open mic where most performances consisted of karaoke or harmonica or someone singing with a guitar or dancing hula to a CD. still, nice crowd of people and I had fun anyway |

Last May, a couple of us drove up to attend the Inland
Empire Ukulele Festival. We were invited by another
forum member who reads, but does not post. This was
the 7th annual event and we were new to the format.
It was a large church hall with about a thousand chairs
in a U shape facing the stage. Ukulele groups from all
around the Inland Empire (there was also one group
from Palm Desert, along with individuals from all over)
sat in segmented groups.
There were some group performances on the stage, but
most groups performed from where they were seated.
The sound engineer had a small mixer with long cables
and several microphones that were moved around the
room to accommodate the groups. Each group played
3 to 4 songs, in rotation. The ages of the performers
ranged from grade school children to senior citizens.
Now to the finances. The charge to attend this grand
festival was only $10 bucks… INCLUDING A
BUFFET LUNCH! After the groups finished playing,
we broke away for lunch. What a grand spread it was,
too. There was tons of Hawaiian, Samoan, Fijian,
Korean, Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, German, French,
American, Italian (lots of pizza) food and it was for
sure that everyone got plenty (I’m sure I left out
several of the ethnic cuisine from that list) to eat and
then some! Ice cold bottled water and hot coffee, too.
Deserts were too many to mention.
There were several vendors outside the meeting hall.
Everything from cultural goods to musical instruments
and electronics.
After the lunch break, we were entertained by Orlando
Palitang and his trio of ukulele, guitar and bass. They
played a variety of Hawaiian, Classic Country and
Classic Rock. It was very entertaining and showed the
versatility of the mighty ukulele!
This was followed by individual acts. I signed up
Carol B and myself. We played and sang a Pat
“Palika” Enos/Bill Tapia tune titled “Makaha Valley”.
There will be more of us from the San Diego area
attending next year for sure. Thanks to all the time
and labor of all those that put the event together! Ric

Well this looks like fun!
I have only one suggestion for the folks putting this on. Take the extra chairs and ladders off the stage and dress it up with tropical plants and decorations. It will make a big difference in the visual presentation.
