The subject line is the whole question in a nutshell. Who is using which (or both)? What are the virtues of each?
I am trying to justify the price of the more expensive AD-5, but many reviews say that unit represents "a lot of buttons that don't do much of anything."
Thanks in advance...

The Para DI is a great unit from a great company. The parametric eq takes a little getting used to, but it is an awesome pedal. If you want all the extra knobs, check out Baggs' new Venue DI. |

I recently bought the Para DI, for use with my RISA tenor Uke-stick (which has no controls on it). I haven't had many opportunities to use it yet, but I'm very pleased with what I've gotten out of it. |

Hey Bill,
I have a couple PADIs. For me, the PADI is the single most useful pedal I've ever used. A PADI and Analysis Studio cable goes a long way. The parametric eqs on the PADI are pretty user friendly. The bass knob is at just the right frequency to get a really big bottom for a guitar, and low enough that it is not in the "muddy" frequencies. The next set of para eq knobs does not have frequencies, but rather lists letters that correspond to bass notes. It is very useful for tuning out notes that are jumping out. For example, if you are in taropatch and the G bass string is slamming too loud, you just turn the knob to "G" and turn down the gain for that frequency. Mid and treble eqs are also very useful, especially if you use low end PAs, that often take the high top end off the guitar or add too much piercing high-mid (around 1.2 khz). Customer service for Baggs has also been very good. They replaced a unit for me even though I didn't have a receipt or even remember where I bought it. Andy has a PADI, so you're probably already familiar with the unit. Downside is no verb, delay or boost.
I tried the Venue, but just could not get it to give a clear sound. I was very excited before it came out, but was extremely disappointed when I tried it. Some folks are using it around town, so maybe they are having better luck than I did. It has a boost switch and a tuner, which some people like.
I haven't personally used the AD-5, but I think Uncle Dennis Kamakahi was using one when I ran sound for him a few times. You might want to ask him what he thinks. He's the only one I've seen with that unit. I would love to hear what you think about it if you try it out. |

I had seen and heard Andy's PADI on a gig. Later the same week, I heard Martin Taylor using a PADI in concert on his archtop. As I am not particularly happy with my cheap archtop, I was going to head straight to the store for a PADI.
Peter Moon Jr. is using the AD-5 for his 'ukulele and swears by it. How do you think the whole debate began? I was dead set on the PADI, and then...
Thanks, everyone, for the feedback. [No pun intended.]

I have been using gigapro, I like the portable thing. Owned Paracoustic DI for a time and liked it. Needed money and sold it. I use a LB- 6 pickup, by LR Baggs. Owned the Gigapro for 4 years no problem. DI for 3 years before selling, I can't say anything bad about them. this is in My Taylor Koa K22 |

I don't think you can buy an AD-5 anymore unless you find one used. It was either replaced or outlasted by the AD-3 (a pedal version). |
Craig My goal is to be able to play as well as people think I can. |

Craig, I'm sure you are right, I don't know if they still make under saddle passive pickup. Mahlo |
