After reading what seemed to be a hundred pages of horror stories I did not find an example of someone purchasing a seat on the plane for their guitar(s). Anyone ever do this? At $175 each way to check it or carry it on as baggage, sometimes you could break even. If two people fying on the same flight with guitars could put both of them in one purchased seat, they could save money and have their guitars inside. Any experiences with this? Dave

Not a bad idea I guess. For my next flight to HI the tiks are $550 round trip. So with two guitars and two ways that comes to $137.50 each guitar each way. I can send it US Post with $3000 insurance for about $85 each way (and I do not have to lug it around the airport), so I guess I would choose to "go postal" in this case.

Putting both guitars in one seat might be up to the airline. They might insist on each guitar having it's own seat and ticket. Unko Paul |

Hey Lawrence,
What is worse than someone "going postal"?
Someone going "meno-postal"! Look out!
Cocktail hour on the seawall in Napili Bay in about 5 weeks. Save up your jokes, I'll be listening.

That may be the situation, AND they might also require each guitar to pay for it's own blanket rental, in-flight meal, and in-flight movie headphone rental, not to mention a possible toilet rental!!

If you purchase a ticket for the guitar, you should be able to tune up and play as loudly as you want, whenever you want, during the flight. If anyone complains, just tell them that "the baby" gets restless when flying. |

I get pretty restless when flying myself. Something about being wedged into a seat three sizes smaller than my clothes get in the closet at home makes me restless every time. I hate flying with a passion. It was funner when I was skinnier. That was in a different century. Unko Paul |

Phooey on whether the guitar going survive -- the real question is whether the shorts going fall down and whether you going el-kabong your wife on the head with the super-duper travel guitar case. I'm still seeing stars and cuckoo birds. |

I gonna tie 'em up with a rope, like Jethro Bodine. No buckle to set off the alarms. If a tree falls in the forest, and no on is there to hear it, is it still the husband's fault? Unko Paul |

I'm still chuckling over the baby getting restless while flying.
When I get restless (read anxious), I start whistling - it's an unconscious habit, but at least I'm really good - sound just like a song bird and my lips don't move at all. It's my one true talent in life, and comes in handy in all sorts of places "where I'd rather not be." ie: crowded restaurants, movie theaters, long lines at the grocery store, and airplanes. My kids loved it when they were little and we were flying back and forth from Maui to the mainland. All the passengers would be looking around for the bird, and I'd be whistling away, not even realizing I was whistling. The kids would eventually distract me, and I'd settle down to an occasional chirp. But a few years ago though, I flew from San Francisco to Ireland direct (long, long flight) and my daughter was sitting several rows behind me, hiding behind a magazine (she was 17, then). Before I really knew what was happening, a flight attendant found me out and politely asked me to quit whistling and start taking Xanax.
But... instead of Xanax, I think I'll just let the "baby" out of it's bag and start playing. |

whoa... nice pix, nice guitars. I am still amazed you found an EMI on ebay.
All A couple more things on this flying deal... 1) United recently lowered their oversize baggage fee. It was $175 each way, it is now $100.
2) If you carried your guitar to the plane and either had to gate check it or were able to carry it on the plane... did you have to pay the oversize baggage fee? The websites are confusing on this and the airlines cannot find anyone to answer my question.

I doubt it. I always gate check my carry-on--after pulling out whatever I want on the plane --just so there is more room in the overhead for someone's instrument. And I've never been charged a fee.
Ditto the few times I was asked to gate check something. No fee.
FWI: I mentioned this in the steel guitar section, so ya might have missed it. Here's an almost sure fire way to get your smaller axe on board:
1) As you go through the gate to the ramp, smile & ask the agent for a gate check tag (United's are green). He or she will smile back and say something like, "Good, you'll need to gate check that."
2) Before you reach the end of the ramp, put the tag in your pocket.
3) Stash the item in the overhead & take your seat. It helps if you finagle a way on to the plane early...

In spite of all this talk about over sized baggage fees--has anyone ever been charged one for a guitar?
I haven't after a few flights with my big Calton flight case; which would be subject to it if someone wanted to get tough...
Anyone here have to pony up in the last year or two? |

Mark So even when you check the Calton into the regular baggage at checkin they don't charge you the oversize fee? Interesting. Which airline(s)? |

I sent my guitar by USPO last year because the psycho-torture agents at United Airlines customer dis-service phone center said that my Calton case would indeed be charged the over-size fee. When I got to the check-in counter a month later they were actually measuring the size and weight of each and every checked in bag of each and every customer, and they made sure to measure each dimension at the largest place. One of my bags is just 2 inches less than the magic 62 and the gate agent let me know that if it was sightly larger I would have had to fork over the cash, so it seems clear that the Calton case would not have made it past the U-Nazi Airlines SS (without forking over the ransom money).

United. It's just about the only airline that flies out of the grandiosely named Medford Jackson County International Airport.
Sorry, Lawrence, maybe it's just the well known Oregon niceness at play up up here. Or maybe the ticket agents didn't have a tape measure....
Oh, one thing I learned from my friend Kelly, the former camp cop at Lark: If you ask, the answer is no.
So I never ask....
