Also among the special awards the Moe Keale "Aloha Is" Award for Community Service went to George Kahumoku. Past recipients include Frank Delima, Eddie Kamae, Eric Keawe (for his mother Auntie Genoa), Jerry Santos, Kimo Kahoano, Nina Kealiiwahamana and Brother Nolan, Chris Kamaka and Carol Keale.

I do not know who won the few other "special awards" (like the lifetime achievement award), perhaps HARA will post this shortly.

And, has anyone noticed that there is a great shortage of Na Hoku Hanohano event photos after 2007-2008 at the HARA site. Did their photographer and/or Web Master quit? (Just Curious as to why they seemed to stop posting many or any photos for the last few years).

I heard from a twittering bird (like in the song Hi'ilawe) that this year's event cost more that a million bucks, so maybe they will post some photos this time (or maybe they will be even more broke... I hope not).

If that is even remotely true, I think that HARA should cancel next year's awards, donate the million dollars to any number of the many fine charitable organizations in Hawai'i, and award itself the Moe Keale "Aloha Is" Award for Community Service.

Yes- that might be nice, but if they do not have the event then they will not get the million bucks (or whatever it was to pay for the event), nor will they get any other related monies they may have raised from the sponsors (to supplement the workshops and other things they do).

Prime time TV on a major network, even if it is just in Hawaii, is still pretty expensive, and those Hi-Tech Crews that do those "Grammy/Oscar-Style" shows cost a bundle. My understanding is that all of the performers, including the High-Profile ones, donated their time to the event (otherwise it would certainly have cost a lot more), but I would expect that the Production Company / Tech Crew were paid regular rates. Whatever it cost, it was probably a small fraction of what the Grammies or Oscars cost.

I just hope they put some pictures up on the web-site this time!

(And I would gladly pay for a nice blue-ray DVD of the event so I can actually see the broadcast, since I was not able to catch it on the web or TV.)

To answer Lawrence's questions:

I do not know who won the few other "special awards" (like the lifetime achievement award), perhaps HARA will post this shortly.
>>Recipients were George Ka`inapau, Ida Keli`i Chun, The Makaha Sons of Ni`ihau, Boyce Rodrigues, and the Isaacs `ohana.

And, has anyone noticed that there is a great shortage of Na Hoku Hanohano event photos after 2007-2008 at the HARA site. Did their photographer and/or Web Master quit? (Just Curious as to why they seemed to stop posting many or any photos for the last few years).
>>Original web master had family emergencies which caused her to back away from site maintenance. Keola Donaghy takes care of the site when his schedule permits. As for photos, professional photog Phil Spalding has a SLEW of photos on his site (which I hope will eventually migrate to the HARA site, too):

One more reply to Lawrence:

>> Not easy...the legal/copyright issues required to make a DVD of this event, are a headache that HARA just cannot shoulder. Sorry...
