Is anyone aware of a recording for this mele? It makes me chuckle to read the lyrics, which I got from The Queen's Songbook. I just wonder, could this possibly the the original idea for Henehene Ko `Aka? It seems so very similar, all except for the tour around Honolulu. But imagine how dumbfounded I was when I found a Hoof Hearted mele by the Queen!

1. Ehehene ko `aka
A he le`ale`a paha
Ku akula i ka `i`i,
Ke ha`alo`ulo`u nei.

Hui I - A `ike `oe mea `aka
Mino ai ko papalina,
Ina paha ma`ane`i
Pi`i koke ko wahi kai.

2. Mai hana mai `o
O `ike `oe auane`i,
Ua lawa ia mea
I ka lehulehu a pau.

Hui 1 A `ike `oe he mea `aka
Mino ai ko papalina,
Ina paha ma`ane`i,
Pi`i koke ko wahi kai.

Hui II E hehe! hehe! hehe!
E hehe! hehe! hehene!
Ku akula ia ka `i`i,
Ku ha`alo`ulo`u nei

1. Giggle, giggle goes your laughter
You sure must be having fun,
You have started to wheeze
And to bend over too.

Chorus I - And so to you there's something funny,
Making your cheeks wrinkle so,
If it came from the other direction,
You'd soon be quite angry.

2. Don't treat others that way
Lest you quickly discover
That this ability is found
In every one of us.

Chorus I - And so to you there's something funny,
Making your cheeks wrinkle so,
If it came from the other direction,
You'd soon be quite angry.

Chorus II - Ha! Ha! Ha!
Giggle, giggle,
You have started to wheeze
And to bend over too.

Me ke aloha
Malama pono,
Wanda

The only recording of which I am aware is on the long out of print Sons of Hawaii album entitled "This Is Eddie Kamae."

The melody of this song is nothing like the more popular Henehene Kou Aka. And the general idea behind the two songs is quite different, as well. I doubt that they are related to each other or that one is a spin-off of the other.

What a fun mele. And since I've got that album, and am in the process of formatting my shows for this week, I'm going to add it to the playlist!

Listen for it just after 8am (HST) Thursday on www.kkcr.org!

I never cease to be amazed at the mele the Queen has written. The variety, the subject matter, the poetry, the melodies. I am blown away. Add her siblings to the mix, and that just kicks things up another bunch of notches.

Auntie Maria, I will definitely listen.

Bill - mahalo for your input, as well.
