I gotta say that James Hill is not just a great 'ukulele player, he is also outrageously entertaining! We were fortunate enough to hear him perform twice this week on the Big Island, and he is coming back here in February!!! (See Aloha Camp listed elsewhere on this forum)
Those of you who are familiar with him know that he is always breaking new ground. He mastered strumming and picking the instrument years ago, and in order to keep the honeymoon going, he has found another dozen ways to coax outrageous sounds from the instrument. On Saturday, he told the crowd that; "No 'ukuleles would actually be harmed" when he began a 5 minute solo that included bluegrass, technopop, hiphop, and some really grungy sounds that featured chopsticks and a cheap plastic comb.
There is no way to describe this stuff. You just have to hear it for yourself. Try http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1jGz2UkmI0, or better yet, check his web site for events near you. If you think you understand the 'ukulele and you haven't heard James perform... you are in for a revelation.

I saw Mr. Hill in Honolulu at Kapiolani park. He played well, but he sure did not dress well. He a funky looking hat on and looked like he slept in his clothes. Not a very good image for one of the "so called" best uke players around |

You know, he might have slept in the airport. I've seen him in person and he was no slob...
