In conjunction with the 2011 Southern California Slack Key Festival (http://slackkeyfest.com/), Cyril Pahinui and Jeff Peterson will each be conducting an hour long workshop this Friday, the 21st in Torrance:

Opus Music

Torrance CA 90501
$35 each - or both for $70!
Cyril: 6:30p - 7:30p
Jeff: 8p - 9p

We'll have some snack stuff set up for the in-between time. Nice big room with chairs and music stands for everyone. Please RSVP to mitchchang @ mac.com. Sorry for the late notice, hope you can make it.

It was a really cool class - wasn't planned out this way but what an awesome format: Cyril played through a bunch of songs and taught the basic chords in his C tuning and everyone followed along with the changes. Meanwhile, Jeff jammed along and helped call out the chord changes for everyone. Cyril shared about his thoughts on slack key and his father and others who've influenced him over the years. it was a great opportunity for the attendees to really get a feel for Cyril's vibe & style.

Then after a short pizza break, Jeff took over and did such an awesome job expounding on what Cyril did, staying in the same tuning to really let it sink in. He broke down the "rumba" style thumb bass pattern and went over the technical details of left and right hand technique, stuff we both learned as classical students.

I really enjoyed the tag team thing here and everyone loved the class venue (Opus Music in Torrance) so stay tuned for more things to come!

Oh and Kathy Wingert of Wingert Guitars was there and after Jeff had a chance to try one of her beautiful creations, he really fell in love with it - let's see if it works out for him to play it onstage tomorrow!
