Last week the Kupuna Hula Festival was held here in Kona. I did not have tickets, as they usually sell out a year in advance.
At 3 PM on Wednesday afternoon, my phone rang, and it was one of the staff from the Kupuna Hula Festival. "Hey Konabob, we have a Japanese halau asking for a bass player. Would you do it?"
So I got in free, and got to play with two Japanese musicians and a beautiful bevy of Japanese hula dancers.
While I was sitting in the green room with my Walkingbass and Roland Bass Cube, a second halau was practicing. The vocalist came over and said, "Would you perform with us tomorrow?".
So I got to attend the second day for free and hung out with all the Hawaiian musicians.

I love the steel guitar, and it is my main instrument. But the bass has gotten me some of the most amazing gigs...

Aloha,
-Konabob

Sounds like your bass is better than a ticket, Konabob! Of course, credit to the player behind the bass!

... Just sayin' if playing one instrument is good, 2 is better. Maybe I should learn the 'ukulele too.

Pretty good, brah. One of Jack's music laws is "Bess players work." btw, you DO play a pretty mean steel guitar, and I've seen you play ukulele, too. I'm starting to have fun with my walking bass.

As Jack says, "Bass players ALWAYS gig!" I've even learned to "pull bass" on the guitar if needed.
