Just had my last chemotharapy on Friday, and so I am looking forward to a gloriously healthy summer, beginning with a trip to the Valley Isle. George K. has been really kind to me and having gone through the same thing, he has really inspired me.

Looking forward to a lot of quality time with Bob Brozman and my Weissenborn. I am also going to bring my stick bass and can't wait to Kanikapila with everybody...

CA has a way of emotionally sneaking up on you -- e3ven quite a while after the chemo -- Don't be shy in using whatever support resources the hospital has -- lots of studies on how attitude effects recovery, as well as how people who have a good support group and are able to use that group as a resource get better faster and stay better longer

Good luck and enjoy each day, each song.

Thank you all for your aloha! George Kahumoku told me to make sure I ate a lot of green vegetables - Taro greens included!
I think the most important thing he told me was to remember to take lots of deep, grateful breaths... my body definitely responds
well to that! Actually being around happy people (Hawaiian musicians mostly fall into this catogory) seems to also be great
therapy. Now that I am no longer doing chemo, my fingers are losing the numbness... the old steel guitar sounds pretty darn sweet!

Don, I should be ready to start getting together by April 20th or so... You, me, Lenard, right?
JimC - Glad to see you are a KONAWEBer! Definitely see you in July!

Aloha KonaBob, you have the inner strength and the right personality to tackle this whole thing gracefully. So glad I got to know you at the last Kahumoku Camp. My best wishes to you.

Also, I really want to try to play slide guitar, but have several questions.
1. Can I possibly combine acoustic with electric? Is there such a thing as a biscuit cone resonator with a pick-up?
2. What about pedestal? Are those all electric?

You know, I would love to play on the beach with the crowd after hours at the Mauian, but can't drag an amp with long extension chord downthere... What do you suggest?

Dumbly, Julie

Hi Julie,
As you point out, there are a lot of variations on Hawaiian Steel. Each kind of guitar has it's own characteristics. I have an electric lap steel, a metal body with resonator, and then there is my Weissenborn. I love the sweet acoustic sound of the Weissenborn the best, but that is just me. When you hear Bob Brozman play the metal body guitar, it is hard not to get excited…

In any event. An easy way to find out if you want to learn steel is to go to a hardware store and buy nice smooth "cotter pin" which you can slide under the strings on your Taro Patch tuned slack key guitar. Slide it down to just behind the first or second fret. It will raise the strings just enough that you can play the guitar with a steel bar and (if you want to really go for it) finger picks and a thumb pick. If you are going to be on Maui, I will be happy to show you some tricks!

-Aloha!

Julie, there are also all kinds of battery-powered amps you can get but Konabob's idea is the most portable and will sound the most nahenahe.

Aloha KonaBob,
a friend of mine who works in a music store has told me a little about these mysterious guitars, and on the basis of what he has said, I have ordered (at wholesale price) a Regal round neck biscuit cone resonator, which should come in tomorrow or day after...
My thinking is this: I want to learn on a reasonably good instrument, because just as in painting, cheap supplies don't always get you the results you want. If by chance someday I realize steel is just not for me, I should have little difficulty selling something that is of reasonable quality. Hope I'm not wrong here. Anyway, he's going to add the extended nut for me, and I'm trying to line up some lessons soon. This is so exciting, I've always loved the sound of those steel guitars! If you have some time (haha) at camp, I would love to have you show me some things. Looking forward to June! Julie

Oh, my gosh! I would be really happy to show you some stuff. Then again, you will have Bob Brozman there too... Between the two of us, you should walk away being able to play all kinds of stuff on the steel. One thing you might want to try before you get to camp: See if you can tune from Taro Patch D-G-D-G-B-D to G6th which is D-G-E-G-B-D. Depending on your string set, you will be really amazed at the sound of the G6th tuning, or you will curse me for causing you to break a string...

Mostly I play in Taro Patch, but the G6th sounds sooooo Hawaiian on a steel guitar. Kind of like the musical equivalent of a Mai Tai.
Congrats on your new guitar!

Aloha,
-Konabob

Aloha e, Kona Bob:

So glad you're finished with the series, and are back to playing...mahalo for hte cotter pin tip, I'm off to the hardware store tomorrow - who ever would have thought of a Baby Taylor as a steel? I can hardly wait, and for Uncle Gerge's camp, too. See you on Maui.

Yo Bob -

What string guages do you use for these tunings? I'm still playing out of yr basic Bluegrass G tuning (G-B-D-G-B-D), but I'm not thrilled with having to pull strings to get minors, diminisheds and such. That extra E would be cool -- a nice minor triad (E-G-B) would open up a lot of ground!

Also, do you play alternating bass using the bottom strings, a la slack key?

Inquiring minds want to know.

yr pal, Mark
