I thought a new Hapa CD was imminent last summer when a new song was being given high rotation on Maui.
There's a song in E sung by the bass player (or was he on guitar-- nice voice--shaved head, Haole) about riding through a dream or something...
Who know's about dis song and album?

Could you be talking about Eric Gilliom? Is the song "Back to Honopo"? His album is "Like Chow Fun."

Eric -- for those who may not know -- is the multi-talented (actor, singer, composer) brother of the equally multi-talented Amy Hanaiali`i Gilliom.

He may _look_ haole, but the guy's got plenny Hawaiian blood (grandma Jenny Napua Woodd, took hula to New York City in the 1920s!).

Eric will be touring this Fall with Amy and Willie K -- Atlanta, Alexandria, Chicago and St. Louis have been formally announced. Watch the tour website for details on Detroit, New York City, and Minneapolis gigs:

After several samples from "Like Chow Fun", I'm not convinced that the song is the one I seek...
Either the song sample is to short--or it's not the one!
He sang this song at Maui Slack key festival in June with HAPA.

I remember part of melodic development, and an acoustic guitar being played in standard tuning (in E), and the rhythmic feel.
Also the web site doesn't look exactly like the singer on that day...
He had a shaven head and no beard at that time, although I know people vary over the years...
I guess I thought the tune was new, but that day is and was a dream...where's replay!

Subsequently, I heard it in the Maui airport "muzac", and other incidental background situations, but haven't heard it since leaving Maui.
My "riding through a dream" is only a vague impression of what the words were.
I guess I gotta go back to find out!
Any other suggestions?
Still Searchin'.

This might have a lower chance of success, but the other song Eric had been singing with the group was O Tahiti, an upbeat number.

I still suspect that Darin is correct - I have heard Back To Honopo getting lots of airplay this summer, which is kind of odd, since the album is several years old (but it is a very beautiful song). I hadn't listened to the album in a while, and all the airplay reminded me to get it back out again - it is a great album. The chorus goes:
today is for dreaming in peaceful honopo
out where the tradewinds gently blow
there is hope and love and music everywhere I go
may my path lead me back to this place that I love
someday back to honopo

Eric Gilliom is for certain the fellow who was with HAPA at the Maui festival, despite the lack of hair. I have always had great fondness for him b/c he looks eerily similar to my youngest brother. Unfortunately, my rotten memory prevents me from recalling if Back to Honopo was part of the set HAPA did there.

Maybe you can ask Auntie Maria to play the song on her show on KKCR so you can hear the whole thing and decide for yourself.

Thanks for staying on this one a little longer friends...
I really didn't know ANYTING when I started this one...just a dream that wouldn't quiet down...
Good to know about Eric.

Does this song happen to be referring to a particular person?

One google search turned up a reference to Hawaii's Stevie Sparks in a song, but can't be sure if that was a useful reference...
Still that was interesting too.

I want to learn this song if it turns out to be the one I seek...
I probably wasn't getting to the bridge, or lift of the song in the short samples, but will listen again.
Also, what is Auntie Maria's time slot?
As always,

You've got me wondering which song you heard, also!

Okay, I consulted the video footage that I have from the Maui festival and determined that the song is... drum roll please...

Ku`u Home o Kahalu`u written by Jerry Santos. The most well known version is therefore Jerry's as performed by Olomana but many groups have performed this song over the years including Hapa. BTW, it's on Hapa's Namahana album (that's the original Hapa - Barry Flanagan and Keli`i Kaneali`i.)

Not sure if the chords will display in the right places but...

Ku'u Home 'O Kahalu'u
Performed By: Olomana

=========================
D G D
I remember days when we were younger
		    G D
We used to catch 'o'opu in the mountain stream
		   G D
Round the Ko'olau hills wed ride on horseback
		G D	D7
So long ago it seems it was a dream
G D
Last night I dreamt I was returning
G D
And my heart called out to you
		G D
But I fear you won't be like I left you
		 A7 D
Me kealoha ku'u home 'o kahalu'u

		G D
I remember the days when we were wiser
		     G D
When our world was small enough for dreams
		G D
And you have lingered there my sister
	  G D	D7
And I no longer can it seems
G D
Last night I dreamt I was returning
G D
And my heart called out to you
	     G D
But I fear I am not as I left you
		 A7 D
Me kealoha ku'u home 'o kahalu'u
A7 D
Change is a strange thing it cannot be denied
A7 D
It can help you find yourself or make you lose your pride
G D
Move with it slowly as on the road we go
G A7
Please do not hold on to me we all must go alone

D G D
I remember the days when we were smiling
		     G D
When we laughed and sang the whole night long
	     G D
And I will greet you as I find you
		 G D	D7
With the sharing of a brand new song
G D
Last night I dreamt I was returning
G D
And my heart called out to you
		G D
To please accept me as you find me
		  A7 D
Me ke aloha ku'u home o kahalu'u

Mystery solved.

This is incredible...
Yea, yea, yea...
Either thats Hawaiian or the Beatles.
That's the ticket Andy.

Thanks for everyone's diligent passion on this one.
I also have a new cd of "Like Chow Fun" on the way!
Who knows where this will lead...new songs and new awareness.

But I'm throwin' away my Google search Engine, from now on I'm using Andy and the patch gang!

(And I've got Namahana buried but here somewhere, just hasn't been in "high rotation".)
Now if I can just find a search engine for all the things I own.

On the subject of lyrics--I've been searching for lyrics to Hukilau. Not the usual one you hear: The Hukilau Song: Oh we're going to a hukilau. A huki huki huki huki hukilau. Everybody loves the hukilau. Where the laulau is the kaukau at the lû`au. We throw our nets out into the sea...

This Hukilau song is in Hawaiian except for one phrase: "Baby, you and me". It starts out something like:

Hukilau, huki-huki-hukilau
Ho'i .... (says "come to my island", second verse after chorus)
Second verse also talks about paddling.
The song ends singing: hoe, hoe, hoe,
Search engines have not found it.

jmk,
you might want to re-post this under it's own title...
the eyes of Hawaii will then be upon you, and you might get more feedback on this request!
