What I meant to say was it was great hearing her at the conference as she shared her expertise in the field of how to get your music published and also distribution.

And now back to the original topic...
So if Melveen Leed and the Sons of Hawaii both recorded this song
in 1975-76 time frame, who was the FIRST to record it? This would,
by definition, be the "original" recording. Melveen's web page
(above) indicates that the song was specifically written for her
(maybe this was a commissioned work?), but did The Sons actually
record it first?
I know this is a bit trival, but I would like to know the answer,
if it is possible to know, or maybe this should be part of the
kaona of this song.
Can Peter shed light on this - or maybe someone could ask Eddie?

As far as Melveen's statement, I'm out of the loop on that one, but the best thing to do is go to the source and ask Eddie. I'm really unaware of whether or not Eddie composed this for Melveen, this is the first I've heard of it.
What I do know is that Myrna, his wife did the english lyrics and Larry Kimura did the hawaiian translation. Eddie had asked Larry over for dinner and played the song for him and Larry was able to put the translation together very quickly. Larry was teaching hawaiian language at UH Manoa at that point in time and was doing a lot of the translations for composers. Larry's now teaching at UH Hilo, his home town. As for Sonny's version, which was released a couple of years later, it was just a cover of a great song.
