So I've wandered over to this side of taropatch island, to say, I bought a Best of Gabby just to explore...
The steel guitar sounds are simple yet spell-binding!
Back then it must have sounded like a broadcast from the other side of the waterfall...
Not sure how to convey the other worldly combination of Gabby, the slack key, and the slide.
Not of this world...
Anyway, got to get back to the skipper...
Hey I think I hear where Konabob gets some of his tones!
Sorry, no haiku available.

Aloha Gordon,
Which album was it? Does it just say Best of Gabby, or is it Vol 1 or 2?
I just went to listen on your suggestion(I don't have any by Gabby)and on his Vol 1, track 10 is "Lei No Ka`iulani" and the steel on that one is really wonderful! I usually prefer acoustic lap guitar ala Konabob on his Superior Weissenborn copy, but the amped steel on this is great, thanks for making me listen! I wonder if anyone knows if he has more like that on other albums. Some don't have sound samples. I guess I should try Auntie Maria at Mele.com, she would probably have the best selection.

Mahalo Nui!

I recommend the green "Kanikapila" album from Hula Records. It's an entire album of Gabby playing steel instrumentals. I can't remember if it's volume 1 or 2...but it's the green one, as opposed to the red one which features Feet Rogers on steel (also great!).

Aloha Auntie Maria and Jeff, and thank you for the suggesion of that steel cd.

Gordon got me interested when he posted about the cd and the steel guitar he had found "spellbinding", and I have to agree, wholeheartedly!

It seems that I'm all wrapped up in that song on the best of vol 1, track 10, "Lei No Ka`iulani". If that track went on for a long, long time, I wouldn't mind a bit! It's got a relaxing and mesmerizing quality to it. I like the slow pace and rythm of it. And Gabby's playing, as Gordon suggested is simple, but I find it truly beautiful.

Isn't music amazing? It definitely soothes the beast!

If anyone knows of more steel like this by Gabby, or others in this same style, or with this tonal quality, please tell me. Music; it is truly THE gift, thank you Gabby!

Koaniani,
Ola, Barry

Hi,

Just wanted to clarify... the steel player on "Lei No Ka'iulani" is actually David "Feet" Rogers.

Gabby plays regular guitar on this recording.

Aloha Everybody,

Re: Kanikapila Vol. 2 album

Peter Moon is the ukulele player on this 2nd Maile Serenaders venture with guest appearances by Bla Pahinui playing rhythm guitar.

The second Sunday Manoa group consisting of Peter Moon, Albert "Babes" Kalima, and Bla Pahinui is my all time favorite. If you want to know what drove young rock musicians like me back to Hawaiian music, you've got to include in your collection of Hawaiian music the classic Sunday Manoa Album - Hawaiian Time. This album has the true warm folky wood sound of the acoustic guitar that has yet to be duplicated today.

Aloha,
Dennis Kamakahi

Yes, The 1st Sunday Manoa album was very cool. Two songs on this album, Pua Tubarose and Kapalaoa inspired me to start playing the ukulele. Those were the days.
