Aloha e Open Mic `Ohana,
It's official. The sale of the Espresso Garden Cafe fell through and they will be closing their doors on March 31. The landlord, in all it's wisdom, has decided to turn the place into a sushi bar. A number of independent efforts by our `ohana led me to look at other options.
Our open mic will now move to the Second Tuesday of every month and will take place at
Mission City Coffee Roasting Co, 2221 The Alameda, in Santa Clara
Like EG, Mission City has an extensive menu, so bring an appetite. Parking can be a little tight. There are about 25 spaces behind the building and limited street parking, but I have never had a problem. As for getting there, it's actually much easier than EG. Just take The Alameda, north, off of 880 and it's about two long blocks on your left (just before the Alameda makes the big swing around Santa Clara University)
Our next Open Mic will be on April 11. Signups, as always, will be at 6:30 PM and the first act, hopefully the Fabulous Kams, will be at 7:00. We also have a bit more latitude on time. We don't have to be finished until 10:00.
I hope you will continue to support this fine venue
A hui hou,
Dave

| Sorry to hear, not good news at all but fortunately the new venue is available. Is there a house PA system for our use at this new location? |

Ah, the loss, sob, sob. But -- Mission City is a fine place - I occasionally go there to hang out, and it will generate a whole new audience.
Thanks, Dave, for the leg work |

Art, Yes they have a house PA.
Raymond. Yes, the audience should prove to be different. Santa Clara U is right next door and they have a pretty active Hawaiian Club. Not quite the patina of EG, but a lot of nice energy.

The first Sun Jose Hawaii Gift certificate was won by audience member Leah (don't ask me to pronounce her last name)
The second went to our very own jsulle - Jerry Sullivan.

Aloha E 'Ilio Nui, Mahalo for keeping da South Bay Open Mic going. Da Lord knows that I need these occasions to practice and hone my performance skills (as I was falling down "Akaka Falls". Oh well, I'll get em next time).
Best of all is connecting with you all and enjoying everyone else's time on "stage". We are so blessed to have all these opportunities in the SF Bay Area.
Heads Up: next Kani @ Nani's on Thursday 4/27, open mic @ Mike's on 4/29 (DaSilva's Uke Place, b4 concert by Side Order Band), and BTW Touch of Polynesia is at TikiTom's in Walnut Creek this Saturday, 4/15 @ 7pm (watch ArtSap, RodV and Sil play cramped together with 3 odda musicians, and dancers. Not nahenahe, but still Aloha kine music).
Aloha everybody, Sil |

Yes - Last nite went better than I expected. The room we play in is a little smaller than Expresso Garden, but the overall venue is larger. There is a nice kind of separation between the performance room and the cafe. The sound was better than expected too, mostly because the high ceiling was completely lined with thick fiberglass insulation. The Entertainment Manager (Stephen) was also a very cordial host.
Thanks to all who came and played or listened, and thanks to Dave for co-ordinating this change of place.

My special thanks to Dave for taking over. It's nice to know the event is in good hands. (I, too, was surprised at how well it sounded in the venue, and the logistics were such that the espresso machine didn't interfere with the playing. When the remodel is done that will be a super venue.) |

| Although I'm a musician (somewhat questionable at times), I am first and foremost a fan, which is why I've enjoyed coming down to the South Bay Open Mike to watch and listen to the musicians play. The availability of the Mission City Coffee Roasting Co. ensures that the South Bay Open Mike will continue on. Mahalo nui to the establishment's ownership/management and all those involved in making this happen... |

Here is a forward of an email I received from Stephen Michael:
Dave,
Thank You ... and all of the wonderful people who shared the GREAT music and Spirit at The Mission last night. Everyone I had the pleasure to meet was gracious and happy. Welcome to Mission City Coffee Roasting, where "The Mission" is music and cultural arts for all to share and enjoy. All of our regular customers truly enjoyed the Hawaiian Open Mic Night.
Best ... Stephen

Again, thanks for your support and kokua

Mahalo e Ray,
Nice to hear from you. Yeah, you should hear these folks. Slack definitely lives.
Bev and I will be on O`ahu for a couple days in June (after Keola's Camp). Maybe we can hook up again?

Aloha E Dave, thanks so much for keeping up the tradition so lovingly tended by Raymond. I talked to Stephen and he's thinks it will be great if I cart some of my tropical decorations to the Mission for the next Open Mic. I tried to get your OK but you were busy packing up the equipment. I thought it would help set the mood, you know, some palms and some ferns, etc... And I would like to encourage people to wear more Aloha attire. It adds so much to the decor.
As I was listening to the first performers, I looked out the window at sunset and watched several palms swaying in the wind across the street. No, they were not cocopalms, but very pretty nevertheless. Put me in an island mood. Had a great time.
Thanks again,
Julie |
