My wife and I will be visiting her cousins on Oahu 22-31 July. Where can we go hear some great slack key artists? This trip we'll be staying on Oahu with no island hopping planned.

Frank, the first thing you do is start with The Honolulu Advertiser. Look at it on-line before you go. Try http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/current/en/tgifcal
I always use this to map out my musical times on O`ahu

Use the newspaper calendars as a guide -- but be sure to call the venue to confirm who is playing, before you go.
For great Hawaiian music -- traditional, to island contemporary: Aunty Genoa Keawe - Thu - Marriott Waikiki Beach @ sunset Jerry Santos & Friends - Fri & Sat - Hilton Haw'n Village - 8pm Aaron Mahi, George Kuo & Martin Pahinui - Sun - Marriott - 6pm Led Kaapana - Sun - Kona Brewing Co (Hawai`i Kai) - 6pm Mike Kaawa & Friends - Sun - Ko`olau Golf Clubhouse - 3pm
Also check Chai's Bistro @ Aloha Tower Marketplace http://www.chaisislandbistro.com/entertainment.html
And sunset poolside at the Halekulani is picture-postcard perfection, with soft steel guitar, traditional Hawaiian music, and beautiful hula beside the sea....ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Aloha,
Guess I should get brave and post... Remember when folks ask for "slack key", to recommend such :)
There is a LOT of GREAT Hawaiian music around town. At this time, there is not a lot of "slack key". Check out the recommended acts above, and consider seeing George Kuo Sundays at the Marriott Waikiki from 6-9 PM. The mention about calling the venue first and catching the local news rags is a good one. Sometimes people travel or have other gigs that come up. Myself included. That said, you can always consider seeing me at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Tuesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 5-6 PM on-going. Or, The Brew Moon, Ward Centre Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 7-9 PM. on-going. My website has an "appearances" page, that lists what’s going on if you would like to consider something more infamous!
Aloha,
Ray

Good point Karl,
Bobby them are all around, they are very popular, and well worth finding. They were playing at Dukes in Waikiki on a regular basis...I think Fridays? Better check to be sure. Bobby is a fine player and entertainer, the group has been together for many years even though the guys are not that old (to me any way) Again, they are worth seeing. Make sure you have Bobby play you some slack key if you see them. They usually play the crowd....and do it very well.

Maunalua has been playing regularly at Chai's Bistro (Aloha Tower Marketplace), too.
Sure wish they'd release that new album.... |

Aunty,
I talked to Bobby and Kahi a couple of weeks ago; it should be coming..."soon". One thing I know, it's easy to start a project, harder to finish it!
