Aloha from Cleveland, Ohio. I am trying to find the lyrics to Keiki Mahine. I have only heard it by Gary Haleamau and by Dennis Pavao. I cannot find it on huapala or any other lyrics web site. I am also looking for the words to Salomila. Any kokua is greatly appreciated.

Aloha mai e wcerto,

Salomila... The last two verses sound like modern additions to me, but I don't know their origins. I've never heard them sung, either.

aloha,
Sarah
______

Shine a light on me, Salomila
I'm over here, Salomila
Shine a light on me, Salomila
`Oni e, `oni e

Take a away your hand, Salomila
It's full of sand, Salomila
Take away your hand, Salomila
`Oni e, `oni e

Turn off the light, Salomila
Let's go to bed, Salomila
Don't forget your pill, Salomila
`Oni e, `oni e

Turn on the light, Salomila
The hell with the pill, Salomila
Let's go for broke, Salomila
`Oni e, `oni e

Re: Keiki Mahine

The first recording of it was by Diana Aki on her 1989 vinyl album "Moments to Remember" -- and it was said to be a family mele. This statement was reiterated in the liner notes of George Kahumoku's "Love Songs" 2001 CD in which he included the song (sorry, no lyrics in those liner notes). But when Gary Haleamau included it in his "Hemolele" CD in 1991, he stated the composer was Kapeka Ku`ahui`a (tutu to Diana Aki).

Again, no lyrics in the liner notes -- but there is this description:
"A love story telling of a young woman from the uplands and a young man from the seaside. In a time when it was difficult for mauka people to associate with makai people regularly, they decide to take a lover's leap into the sea where they will be together forever."

Sobble!!

Auntie Maria - thank you so much for your help. The best I can think to do is listen to the song over and over until I think I have all the words. Then I will find an Hawaiian laguage expert to go over the lyrics with me to make sure I have them accurately recorded.

Also - thank you for being the definitive source for he mele aloha! I feel as though my husband and I are personally contributing to your retirement fund. I appreciate your selection of music and the ability to preview music prior to purchasing. Our collection of CDs of various types of Hawaiian music now numbers about 70. I don't know why, but I really have no desire to listen to very much music other than mele Hawaii. Everything else just seems so uninspired, dischordant, and with no heart.

Re "Keiki Mahine" EDITED

and as we all know, if you don't get it right, you can get it really wrong! )

... Thanks to islandboo, I was able to listen to the gorgeous Sons of Hawai'i version with again Diana Aki singing, which according to George's liner notes was the original recording of this. The words are very clear. (Listening to a sample clip of Dennis yielded somewhat different lyrics, so there are likely other variations out there.)

Both versions are sung with 2 verses and a ha'ina, each sung twice:

Keiki mahine no ke kuahiwi [Girl (child) from the mountains]
A he mae wale ho'i 'oe [You are simply pining away]

Keiki kane no ke kai [Boy (child) from the sea]
Ho'iho'i 'oe i ke aloha [You return the love]

Ha'ina ka puana [The refrain is told]
Ua lele kahuli i ka moana [(They) jumped headlong into the ocean]

Hu! Make me cry! Kulu ka waimaka

mahalo nui,
Sarah

I'd bet that you could email George Kahumoku for lyrics...

The discussion of the lyrics of Keiki Wahine reminded me of something I encountered on the Big Island last Jan. After some searching, I found it was the Legend of the Naupaka flower. I had taken a photo of the sign describing it at the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden which, if Andy can help me, will be linked to this.

It may not relate to the song at all but maybe will interest you anyhow.

Aloha nui,

Mark E
