Aloha kakou,

Tarvin played with Faith Ako here in Windsor a couple of times. His regular venue is the Maui Prince--something like twenty years of playing there. I'm guessing it is those years of experience that give him such a relaxed stage presence. He really rolls with the music but it looks like he could be dipping poi and slicing a pineapple while he mixes "Island Style" with "Waimanalo Blues".

On his CD, Mele Ohana, he plays in spanish tuning. The result is a little more like contemporary Hawaiian than mele kahiko, but some of his cuts, like ".. ku'u home o kahalu'u" are really nice.

He will be back here in March. Meanwhile, I think you can purchase the CD by contacting Tarvin at

http://myspace.com/tarvinmakia

or, catch him at the Prince.

Bill, thanks for including this link, which I didn't see till now. We went to Faith Ako's album release here (on St.Pat's Day!), saw Tarvin setting up and said in unison, "It's the guy from the Maui Prince!"

I always associated him with that one spot, so it was a shock to encounter him in cold and blustery San Francisco. Apparently he produced Faith's CD and plays on it. And, yes, it looked like he was playing in standard tuning. Tarvin was a great accompaniment to her `ukulele, along with a bassist and drummer, all crammed into a pretty small corner. It was good fun and great music.

e Mike,

Yes, at least from my casual, low-tech listener's perspective, he did a great job on Faith's album. I don't get down to Maui Prince much (except to hang my hammock from those two big kiawe trees south of the beach) but I guess you have seen Tarvin there more than once.

He might be returning to the mainland in the next couple of months. That would be nice. You sort of see palm trees when he plays.

Me ke aloha,

Bill
