Shirley and I were walking around Hawi after the King Kamehameha Day parade last week, and I thought I heard Gabby Pahinui singing... I then realized that it was Bruddah Smitty (who was once part of the Sons of Hawaii Band). I further realized that I didn't hear his friend Duane playing bass!

I am the kind of guy who likes to keep a bass in the back of my car for just such emergencies. So I ran back and grabbed it. Smitty graciously welcomed my offer to back him up, and I spent a good hour or so playing some really great Hawaiian music.

Shirley shot this short video: http://www.konaweb.com/walkingbass/smitty.mp4

You can tell that I was having a really good time!
