                      | Actually...the mele on "Jus' Press" is "Nani, Nani" -- lovely tune, but not the aforementioned "Nani".
So I called Sharon (Led's wife) -- who is a walking encyclopedia of Led's recordings -- and got da scoops. He's only recorded "Nani" one time -- on the vinyl "Ka Manawa Pono". So I put a bug in her ear to have Led record "Nani" on his next CD.

 Here's hoping!

FYI - Led's 59th birthday is this Sunday (small celebration in Kailua...uiha!); he's no longer performing at the Royal Hawaiian's Mai Tai Bar; begins regular Thursday night gigs at the Ala Moana Hotel's Pakele Lounge tonight; begins regular Friday night gigs at the Pagoda Hotel's main restaurant next month. And except for this Sunday (and when he's on tour), he's at the Kona Brewing Company in Hawai`i Kai (Koko Marina Shopping Center). Confused? Bookmark his site:

Track 2 is the Auntie Alice Namakelua composition that Led frequently performs live.

Track 11 is the Alvin Kaleolani Isaacs song that I have never heard Led perform live (although admittedly I have only heard him perform live a handful of times).

Led has recorded both only once - both on the "Jus Press" album

The older I Kona album was actually entitled "Ka Lua O Ka Manawa" and does not contain any version of "Nani." "Ka Manawa Pono" was the title of a CD by `Uluwehi Guerrero.

 Anybody confused yet?

                      | Ha! Me?? Confused?? You betcha! It's all those danged vowels...sigh...

And since it's been over 20 years since "Nani" was released on "Jus' Press", I'll chat with Led Sunday about him adding a SOLO version of "Nani" to his next recording.

                      | "Nani" is on a "proof" CD ("Fresh Cuts From Maui") that Led did with George Kahumoko, Jr. & Da Ukulele Boyz earlier this year . . . don't know what, if any, plans there are for releasing it, but I'm sure it would make a lot of people happy to be able to get it!

                      | Ooh, Cookie - I forgot about that one! Track 8! (Got it from Sharon when Led was here with Mike Kaawa.) And it's on a label from this area, too --- Otherworld Media out of Freeland, WA. That's the company run by David Ossman (of Firesign Theatre) & wife Judith Walcutt. They did a live broadcast from Kauai's slack key show a couple years back...and Auntie Maria was there. (I did a little editing of it for rebroadcast here, and Auntie gave me some thoughts on the "vibe" of the event.) Sharon said they planned a release of it later this year. |

                      | quote:Here's a little more trivia to make matters worse: The first album Led made post-Hui Ohana was with a group named "Na Leo Kani O Punahele." This record contained Led's first recording of the song "I Kona." The song became synonymous with Led and the group, so they changed the name of the group to simply "I Kona." And subsequent pressings of this same LP had the new group name instead of the old. I see copies with either group name from time to time.Originally posted by Auntie Maria

quote:Do whatever you can to urge him to record this song solo, please. He does it so very beautifully and it is a composition that nobody else ever performs. Last week would have been Auntie Alice's birthday, so I profiled her on last Sunday's show and played some of her compositions that nobody performs anymore. I think it is great that Led chose this song for his repertoire - a song that had not been performed or recorded since the late Pauline Kekahuna in the 1950s.And since it's been over 20 years since "Nani" was released on "Jus' Press", I'll chat with Led Sunday about him adding a SOLO version of "Nani" to his next recording.
