Uncle George Style -- Ukulele Workshops Date: Saturday May 31, 2008 Repeat: This event repeats every week. Location: Golden Baked Ham Deli Street: 114 N. El Camino Real City/State/Zip: Encinitas/CA/92024 Phone: (760) 436-9202 Uncle George will be assisted by our own Bill Porter and Ed Forbes (longtime students/protoges of Uncle George) to teach some ukulele workshops in the unique and beautiful "Uncle George" style. Be prepared to play chords "outside of the first position" to add amazing color and character to your ukulele repetoire. Topics will be: ** alternative vamps ** moving past the third fret ** some 9th chords.
A variety of music will be used, some Hawaiian, Big Band and Popular tunes. The first session is Saturday May 10th and will continue as long as there is interest. Uncle George had planned to conduct the classes himself until his stroke prevented him from playing. Bill and Ed have agreed to share what we have learned over the last four years with any interested ukulele players. The sessions will be open to any one who shows up. Seating will be outside so dress appropriately for the weather. Did I leave out the Museum of Making Music http://www.museumofmakingmusic.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=65 ? Giacoletti Music http://www.carlsbadmusic.com/v2/ukuleles.htm ? Buffalo Brothers http://www.buffalobrosguitars.com ? Momilanis Island Traditions http://www.momilanis.com/oside.html ? Mission Bay San Diego Represents Jams http://www.ukuleleunderground.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2932 , [link]http://www.ukuleleunderground.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1230[link] ? Moonlight Beach Ukulele Strummers is currently 491 members. Ukulele Society of America is currently 121 members (yes, Pat Enos and Bill Tapia conduct the kanikapila). I've personally watched most of the above listed Ukulele artists and some others, here. Anyone else wanna' chime in on this thread? In the last three months I've met well over a thousand Ukulele players in Southern California at Kanikapila's, Weddings and other related events. I think the Ukulele movement is much larger than many think. Ric

just kidding. My two favorites are the USA Kanikapila on Thursdays and the Uncle George Workshops on Saturdays. Sometimes we allow the funny little guitars with four strings (some with more) to join us at our weekly Slack Key Open Mike on Tuesdays. Last week, we had Jimmy Patton, a local guitar wizard and gigging performer -- WOW us with some new arrangements for ukulele that he has been working on. |

I watched Jimmy Patton play "Sleepwalk" on two guitars simultaneously at the opening of the new Encinitas Library. He was playing rythm on one and lead on the other. Simply amazing. Ric

They're within 20 to 30 miles north of SDSU, Les. They are in North County San Diego.
Mika'ele will have to confirm the location for the Ukulele Society of America, in August. We have used two locations - one in Oceanside and the other in Carlsbad. Ric |
