Heads up if you live near Ann Arbor...

Visit Hawaii with 'Hula Soundings' at the library
by Seth Gordon | The Ann Arbor News
Thursday October 23, 2008, 2:00 PM

Enjoy the exotic pleasures of hula without traveling to Hawaii this Sunday at the downtown branch of the Ann Arbor District Library.

Join Dr. Amy Ku'uleialoha Stillman, Associate Professor of American Culture and Music at the University of Michigan, from 2-3:30 p.m. in the multi-purpose room for a lecture and demonstration of the ancient dance form entitled "Hula Soundings."

The presentation will include performances with rarely-seen instruments such as 'uli'uli, 'ili'ili, ipu heke, and the most sacred instrument, the pahu drum. The event is organized with the help of the University of Michigan Stearns Collection of Musical Instruments.

Born and raised in Hawai'i, Dr. Stillman is a dedicated scholar of Hawaiian music and culture, the author of "Sacred Hula" (1998) and the director of the Ann Arbor-based Great Lakes Hula Academy.

For more information call 734-327-4560.
