This past Saturday, Oct., 25th, somewhere between 550 and 600 people attended the 10th Anniversary Ho'ike, performed by Kumu Leolani Lowry's Hula School of Santa Cruz, Ka Lei Wehi O Ka Mailelauloa. This was by far and away the largest crowd I have seen to attend a Hawaiian event in the Monterey Bay Area, in a long time. It was completely sold out. The size of the turnout just amazed everyone.
Guest musicians included George Kahumoku, Jr., Nathan Aweau, Huna Wai, Patti Maxine and Kalea Miles.
Over 40 students from the Halau performed 17 Hulas, to the accompaniment provided by the wonderful musicians listed above. And if that were not enough, visiting Kumu from the audience also participated in some kanikapila hula.
A feeling of 'Ohana permeated during the whole evening. The standing ovation that was given at the end of the night was well deserved.
Congratulations to all the members of the Halau that worked so hard for so many months. You made history in Santa Cruz this past Saturday. People around here will be talking about this one for a long time.
