Had the very cool opportunity to watch Bolo do his finger flashing guitar stylings at the last performance held over at the Ulua theatre owned by the actor Jason Scott Lee. It was really great, but he was not alone; He was joined by Andy Rising a rising talent you might say, bringing the Cello onto the volcano scene of slack key. Bolo's newest material is a different look into his musical abilities . . . My wife and I Karla found a couple seats in the back of the theatre, Bolo and Andy had already started playing. Both in white and halo'd by blue and violate lighting they played hauntingly beautiful melodies that Bolo has written and will be (I hope) included in his next album soon to arrive. That night they reached up and pulled a few stars from the night sky and turned them into music glittering off their strings for us to hear. It was the best performance I've seen bolo do and a great way to bring to a close the Ulua Theatre. Thanks Jason for giving us musicians a home there in the Volcano!
FYI, for anyone who might be on the Big Island later this month, Bolo is scheduled to hold a CD release concert (his new CD is called "Back") on 11/22 at the East Hawai'i Cultural Center in Hilo. He'll be joined by Na Hoku Hanohano Lifetime Achievement Award winner Buddy Fo on percussion, and Andy Rising on cello.
Chris speaks the truth! Bolo's new material is different, and I love it! (Also loved the old stuff, so...)
