Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame inductee and 2010 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards finalist Alan Akaka will be teaching a workshop the day before the 2018 Southern California Slack Key Festival on January 13, 2018 10am in Manhattan Beach. RSVP to surferdiver @ verizon.net 310-545-6393

This 2-hour workshop will cover a popular Hawaiian tune complete with fill-ins; the secret to nailing those mysterious chimes effects (harmonics); and a Q&A

Akaka’s steel guitar sound and style incorporates ideas and styles from the masters of steel: David Rogers, Benny Rogers, Jules AhSee, Billy Hew Len, David Keliʻi, Jake Keliʻikoa, and his teacher Jerry Byrd. He has recorded with a number of artists including Genoa Keawe, Benny Kalama, Sonny Kamahele, Raiatea Helm, Kuana Torres Kahele, Nohelani Cypriano, Nina Kealiʻiwahamana, and Karen Keawehawai’i as well as with Sweden’s Simons and a number of Japan artists and groups.

Akaka established and directed the Kamehameha Middle School Nā 'Ōpio Singers and Hawaiian Ensemble, was the director of the Performing Arts Academy at Kamehameha for 16 years and in 2009, he established Ke Kula Mele School of Hawaiian Music, providing a special environment where children and adults can learn to play ‘ukulele, steel guitar, upright Hawaiian bass, and guitar.
