Now available from mele.com and direct from www.hawaiianlegacy.com , this is another of Eddie and Myrna Kamae's documentaries. This film focuses on the relationship between the natural surroundings of Hawai`i and the music of the culture.

The history is told in terms of the hula and chant that preceded modern Hawaiian music, through the introduction of western musical concepts, and on to the early Hawaiian composers. Along the way are performances and discussions by Eddie, Dennis Kamakahi, Braddah Smitty, and many others.

I have a bunch of new favorite Hawaiian songs as a result of this lovely film, and hopefully a new level of understanding of the music.

Eddie & Myrna Kamae have signed a distribution deal, so that almost all of their wonderful films will be made available on DVD now (yay!). Stay tuned for the next release...

And for those of you in Hawai`i, their newest film will be broadcast on PBS in January (sorry, Myrna didn't give me the exact date yet):

KEEPERS OF THE FLAME: The Legacy of Three Hawaiian Women 2005
A 60-minute tribute to three Hawaiian women whose lives spanned the 19th and 20th centuries: Hawaiian historian and author, Mary Kawena Pukui; dancer and chanter, Iolani Luahine; and kumu hula and teacher, Edith Kanakaole. This story reveals the power of their commitment to Hawaiian culture and values and the ways their influence is still felt today.

An awesome film (but then again, these all are!)
