Paul pointed out something to me that I never noticed. Leonard Kwan musta had an affinity for `opihi. On this recording, among others, are the following sons: `Opihi Moemoe `Opihi Bounce `Opihi Moemoe (alternate version) `Opihi Momona Nui New `Opihi Moemoe
Surely there has to be a story behind using `opihi in so many songs, especially on one recording. Anyone have any stories as to why?

I recall that Margaret Williams, the owner of Tradewinds Records, named 'Opihi Moemoe and other tunes. Here is a previous discussion: When was Opihi Moemoe originally written? |

I concur, Andy. If you recall, on the Susan Friedman video, Leonard said that Margaret Williams came up with the title `Opihi Moemoe.
So, I suppose that Leonard (or Margaret) just continued the tradition.

Aloha,
I stumbled across another story about how the Opihi Moemoe name came about in Leonard Kwan's Slack Key Instruction Book. In his "A Special Mahalo to:" section in the beginning of the book, Uncle Leonard credits Noelani Mahoe for working with him to name all the songs in the book except Opihi Moemoe. Regarding Opihi Moemoe, he states, "This title was selected from a list of suggestions offered by Don McDiarmid, Sr. A mahalo to Don, as this title proved to be the key for most to follow." |

Well, ophi'i's big couisn, abalone, is onolicious. Used to dive for them at a secret cove north of La County line on da Coast Hiway. Pound 'em first. Greedy divers almost wiped 'em out, so no mo' can get 'em. But, the taste..... Oh, my!! |

There is a video circulating of Leonard Kwan talking about the "true story" behind entire `Opihi cycle. It was shot during a recording session, probably during one of those last Dancing Cat sessions. I saw it maybe ten years ago at Keola Beamer's house on Maui.
It ain't like any of the other stories about the name you've heard. According to Mr Kwan, all of the songs taken together tell a, ahem, rather vivid story....
Suffice it to say his story is extremely salacious, leaves little to the imagination, and it's hilarious.
Is it the "truth?" Well, it is certainly from the source.

I'm still waiting for someone to write a song called "Hee-hee `Opihi" (or "The Laughing Limpet").
If any of you do so, please give me some small credit. |
