This week on Pakele Live! with Tony Solis we celebrate our move to our new home at the Willows with a very special show featuring multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award winners Mailani, Nā Palapalai and Cyril Pahinui!
Mailani - best known for her collaborative efforts as a member of the hugely popular, Nā Hōkū Hanohano award-winning duo Keahiwai (who released five albums), Mailani’s self-titled debut solo album earned her Female Vocalist of the Year honors at the 2010 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards. The album featured innovative yet respectful interpretations of Hawaiian standards, as well as several original compositions in both Hawaiian and English. Her blend of the contemporary and the traditional delighted aficionados of both genres. Mailani’s second solo album, ‘Āina, will be released on March 29.
Nā Palapalai - formed in 1995 by Kehau Tamure and Kuana Torres Kahele in their home town of Hilo, they are valued for their original compositions and falsetto harmonies. The band, which also includes new member Ioane Burns, brings a raw energy and enthusiasm to traditional Hawaiian music. Their albums have been nominated for and won countless Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards, and their music is used by hula halau worldwide. This year, Kuana will debut his long-awaited solo album, and Kehau will continue to compose new, original music for a forthcoming Nā Palapalai CD.
Cyril Pahinui - son of musical legend Gabby Pahinui, Cyril is one of Hawai‘i’s most gifted musicians in his own right. He has played Carnegie Hall, contributed to a number of Grammy® Award-winning albums and was nominated for others, received several Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards, and recorded on dozens of Hawaiian musical releases. As a slack key guitarist, Cyril’s technical virtuosity, rhythmic adaptations and instrumental harmonics impart the soul of Hawaiian music, and his beautiful, emotive, and well-recognized voice renders an intimate picture of his beloved Hawai’i nei.
