One of my friends wants to hold a "May Day is Lei Day" at her Roaring Camp Railroads next year. She is a Honolulu girl originally. What I'm trying to find out is what kinds of activities do folks remember from Lei Day. I believe there are lei making contests, hula dances representing the different islands, ono grinds (DUH!). What else does one do to celebrate Lei Day?

Thanks, Julie

On Oahu, there's a parade, free concert at the bandshell, Hawaiian Steel Guitar Association concert at their stage, lei contest, ono grinz, vendor booths, and more that I can't think of now.

Don't forget the huge military parade and massed choirs singing "L'Internationale."

Yes Julie, I think that a large military parade would go over well in Santa Cruz County. Matbe we could invite E Clampus Vitus to march. Now that you've got me started - I'm reading a book about Kindy Sproat's life and he mentions how May Day was such a "great day" and how there was a Maypole with banners hung from the top and you had hold the banners and dance around the pole. Oh yes, doesn't May Day require a queen?

I bet! I was thinking about the parade with the wahine riders, but maybe that's another event. I, personally, have never seen a parade on Lei Day, but I did hear the Royal Hawaiian Band from my room at the Queen Kapiolani and assumed, if I hear a march, it must be a parade. Oh, well.....

You guys!

Here in Santa Cruz County if there is a parade it's most likely a pakalolo parade! Don't inhale!

Julie

PS, the idea about raffling leis for a fundraiser is great. Seems like what I do mostly nowadays is fundraise...

Can someone work out a Hula for that? I sure it would work if some turnarounds were added!

In '63, I was in Kailua Elementary on O'ahu, and I remember singing a May Day song. I was pretty young though...it went something like this:

May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii
Gardens of flowers everywhere
All of the colors of the rainbow
Maidens with flowers in their hair...

I don't remember any more of it...

a hui hou... Rob
"Lawe i ka ma'alea a ku'ono'ono"
Translation: Acquire skill and make it deep

The year we were there for May Day there was a parade ending at the Bandstand. There were people portraying royalty, with the appropriate kahili borne in advance of them. There were school groups or more likely halau in the parade as well. For a number of years, the Brothers Caz had a May Day concert at the Shell, but I think they've gone to Maui the last few years. The lei making competition is pretty much a requirement.
Here's the lyrics to the song: http://www.squareone.org/Hapa/m10.html

Wanda - the book is "A Storyteller's Story: Kindy Sproat of North Kohala, an Autobiographical Oral History". Of course Kindy is no longer with us in the physical sense and the book is from transcibed interview recordings. It has "65 photos and the lyrics of 30 songs" and can be purchased thru the North Kohala Community Resource Center at northkohala.org. It costs $20, plus another $5 to ship it and I've found it to be a great read. I think I was aware that he was born and spent the early part of his life in a "remote North Kohala valley", but I had no idea that that valley was Honokane Iki

Note to Santa Claus: I have been a good girl. Please bring me the Kindy Sproat book for Christmas.

Mahalo for the info, Bubba. I'd love to be a "song collector" like Kindy Sproat.

In school, we celebrated each individual island as well as the different immigrant groups in Hawaiʻi. Perhaps some special items/food from each island as well as each immigrant group would be not only fun, but educational.
