This week on Pakele Live! with Tony Solis we are excited to host steel guitarist Paul Kim – and he’s bringing a number of his friends (including Grammy® nominee Mike Kaawa and Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award winners Nā Palapalai, among others)! Regular Pakele Live! viewers have seen Paul on the show before, supporting other musicians – but viewer response was so overwhelming when he was featured singing several falsetto songs, we asked him to come back and headline his own show!
Paul was born and raised in Kailua, O’ahu. His first instrument was the ‘ukulele, and he later added steel guitar. He emulates the playing style of the legendary Hawaiian steel artist David "Feet" Rogers, and he sings old-style falsetto.
In his words:
“I started playing the `ukulele when I was 9 years old. I would practice and sing to LPs that my mom owned. I played in the church choir, and then became interested in the steel guitar. I started learning from one of Jerry Byrd's students, who later told me that if I was truly interested in the instrument, I should learn from Jerry himself. That's where I learned how to play steel. That was back in 1988. From that point on, I began playing at hotels and with various groups. Being that the steel is played more with traditional Hawaiian songs, I was fortunate enough to play with a lot of the old-timers.....the legends. What a precious gift that was, and still is.
Since then, I've played with numerous groups on their recordings (including Eddie Kamae's "Sons of Hawaii"), traveled the world, and even played at one of President Obama's Inaugural Balls. I am also the president of the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Association (http://www.hsga.org/). I currently play on Sundays at Honey's Restaurant at Ko`olau Golf Course in Kaneohe with Mike Kaawa, Analu Aina, Ocean Kaowili, Greg Kekipi, and guest artist Eddie Kamae from 3:30-7pm.”
Join host Tony Solis as we welcome Paul Kim to the Pakele Live! stage on Thursday, March 10 from 6-8p.m. HST at our new home at the Willows (901 Hausten St., Honolulu). There is no cover charge or minimum, no reservations are required and all ages are welcome. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. (Doors open at 5:30.) Guests may choose from the full nightly buffet ($34.95) or a new a la carte menu created especially for Pakele Live! (and available only during the show), with prices ranging from $5 to $16. Drink specials are also available, and validated valet parking is only $3.
You may also watch the show live online at: http://www.pakelelive.com/
(If you watch online, please email the show at pakele @ lava.net and let us know you’re watching! Mention your name and where you’re located - city, state – or country, if outside the U.S.!)

We've been visiting Honey's on Sunday for a few years now. It's a fantastic experience, and one of the most important elements is Paul Kim's sweet steel guitar and falsetto. Total chicken skin. He certainly deserves his own spot on Pakele Live.

I am listening right now, and oh my how wonderful this music is.
And of course, you know I am right here with my kleenex because Paulie was so kind to mention about Uncle Ronald Kanahele's passing yesterday.
I am really loving the music. I am in hog heaven. |

I know, right? Caught me off guard and he was looking at me for confirmation of the date - and I was busy blinking really fast so I wouldn't burst into tears in front of alla people who were there!!! But it was soooo very sweet of him to dedicate the song to Uncle Ron... *sniffle* |
