This week Pakele Live! with Tony Solis presents the second of five special “Kōkua Japan” shows to benefit our friends affected by the earthquake and tsunami! Our first special last week drew the single largest number of online viewers in the show’s four year history, with over 26,000!

This week’s guests:

Herb Ohta, Jr. (with Jon Yamasato and special guests) - son of the great Herb “Ohta-San” Ohta, Herb Jr. is a recognized ‘ukulele master in his own right, having recently celebrated his 20th year in the music business. Herb has eight solo albums to his credit, as well as seven duets (with his father, and with multiple Grammy®Award winners Daniel Ho and Keoki Kahumoku). He has appeared on over 50 other recordings, co-authored two ‘ukulele instructional books, received numerous Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award nominations, and won several Hawai’i Music Awards, including one for his most recent album “’Ukulele Nahenahe.” He travels the world performing and giving both group and private ‘ukulele lessons. He continues to be beloved by his many fans and well-respected by fellow musicians.

Manoa Madness – comprised of accomplished musicians who all perform with other groups, Manoa Madness is Nathan Nahinu (of Palolo), Grammy® Nominee Chino Montero (of Palolo and Amy Hanaiali’i’s band), Ioane Burns (of Nā Palapalai) and Halehaku Seabury (of the Jeff Teves Quartet and Ke Kauoha the Jazz Project). Their beautiful vocal harmonies, musical expertise and sense of fun have been delighting audiences throughout the islands for the past few years.

Kūpaoa – college buddies Līhau Hannahs and Kellen Paik formed their band in 2005 to play at a friend’s wedding. Līhau, who didn’t play an instrument and had no experience singing before an audience, quickly learned to play bass and sing into a microphone. Their exquisite harmonies were a hit, and they began performing regularly at clubs around town. In 2008 Kūpaoa released their first album “Pili O Ke Ao,” which resulted in four Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award nominations in 2009, of which they won two, including Most Promising Artist and the prestigious Haku Mele Award for Hawaiian language song composition. 2010 was a big year for them – within a short period of time, the couple released their second album “English Rose” and attended another wedding – their own.

Hapa Folk - a trio consisting of Kimo Stone, Poki'i Vaughan and Douglas Kilpatrick, Hapa Folk was nominated in 2009 for a Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award for their album “Good Fun,” and they’re currently on the 2011 preliminary nominees list for their most recent album “Mai Hilahila.” They play a variety of genres, including traditional and contemporary Hawaiian, American folk and classic rock. (They’ve been likened to the Kingston Trio with aloha shirts...) They play a variety of Hawaiian favorites such as Noho Paipai, Hawai’i 78, and Ka Loke, but also songs like Can't Help Falling in Love, Come Go With Me, If I Had a Hammer, Mama Don’t Dance and Daddy Don’t Rock and Roll, and more. Like the title of their first album – good fun!

(Kūpaoa and Hapa Folk will both have hula dancers with them!)
