Well there are so many "Hawaii Stars" guest judges! Tony Conjugacion, Zanuck Lindsey, Raiatea Helm and Nohelani Cypriano have all judged multiple times.
I never posted an introduction, but my day job is designer of standardized tests. In my professional opinion, this question is hardly fair or valid if it has more than one correct answer! ;-) LOL |

If not Haunani Apoliona the she must be Haunani Kahalewai. What say you, Bill? |

Yep Wanda, I think you're right. I thought for sure it was the Haunani on the album cover on the link above, and when I googeled "Haunani", Apoliona came up first. When I dug a little deeper I found this link for a different LP also done by "Haunani" but with a credit for "Haunani Kahalewai". Maybe she is Iwalani's sister.

I knew this quiz would be a stumper for those relatively new to Hawaiian music. All but three of the twelve legends in that banner have passed away - many long, long ago.
But that is, indeed, Haunani Kahalewai - star of "Hawaii Calls" and of her own shows in the Royal Hawaiian Hotel's Monarch Room in the 1960s. Iwalani is her sister and was also a star of "Hawai`i Calls." Haunani achieved greater fame, however, because she had recording contracts with two mainland labels, Decca and Capitol, so her albums found national distribution. Iwalani, fortunately, is still with us and graced us with her presence at Carnegie Hall just a few years ago. You can hear Iwalani's voice on Episode #3 of "Ho`olohe Hou" and Haunani's voice on Episode #1. Haunani had a unique vocal range spanning four octaves. She could go from deep contralto to high soprano. There aren't many trained opera singers with a range like that.
So, what's been answered correctly so far?
1. Top Row, Image 1 NOPE 2. Top Row, Image 2 Irmgard Aluli 3. Top Row, Image 3 NOPE 4. Top Row, Image 4 Linda Dela Cruz 5. Top Row, Image 5 Bill Kaiwa 6. Top Row, Image 6 Vickie I'i Rodrigues 7. Bottom Row, Image 1 Marlene Sai 8. Bottom Row, Image 2 Sonny Chillingworth 9. Bottom Row, Image 3 Haunani Kahalewai 10. Bottom Row, Image 4 Charles K. L. Davis 11. Bottom Row, Image 5 NOPE 12. Bottom Row, Image 6 Kui Lee
Hints for the remaining three?
1. Top Row, Image 1 - Legendary hula teacher, composer, and falsetto singer. And his name appears elsewhere in this thread attached to the wrong picture!
3. Top Row, Image 3 - Not known as much for his musicianship as for his comedy, he was a police officer by day and entertainer by night. It was his band that appeared in the opening sequence of "Hawaii Five-O" each week. (Remember those slow-motion hips dancing to Tahitian drums?)
11. Bottom Row, Image 5 - See answer to Question #1 of hawaiianmusicfan138's last quiz above.
So, Mark, for a self-professed Hawaiian music neophyte, how did you get so many of these? And just how many records have you collected so far?
As for Bill Kaiwa, he is a treasure. He has always been one of my heroes. You see this rugged, well-built Hawaiian man all in white on an album cover and you think, "Now THAT is class!" He was a judge in the falsetto contest the year I (finally!) won, and he awarded me with a milo poi pounder that he personally carved. He is as amazing an artist as he is a singer. His oil pointings are absolutely priceless. |
